Armenia (Հայաստան; tr. Hayastan), officially the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic (Հայկական Սովետական Սոցիալիստական Հանրապետություն; tr. Haykakan Sovyevakan Sotsialistakan Hanrapetut’yun), is a Union Republic of the Soviet Union. It is the smallest and most densely populated Republic in the Union, with an area of 29,743 km² and a population of 3.53 million as of the 2019 census. Located in the Caucasus, Armenia is a landlocked nation bordered by Kartvelia to the northwest, Azerbaijan to the northeast and east (south through Nakhichevan), Turkey to the west and southwest, and Iran to its south.
