Latvia (Latvian: Latvija), officially the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic (Latvian: Latvijas Padomju Sociālistiskā Republika) is a disputed constituent republic of the Soviet Union in the Baltic region. It is bordered by the Baltic sea to the west, Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, and Russia to the east. Riga, the republic's primate city, serves as its capital. Other cities of significance include Daugavpils, Liepāja and Jelgava.

The territory of modern day Latvia has been variously controlled by different civilizations and peoples. The region was first conquered in the Northern Crusades by the Livonian order. The emerging Baltic German-dominated duchies of Courland and Livonia would then go on to be ruled by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as well as the Swedish and Russian Empires. Latvia declared its independence on 18 November 1918, during the Russian Civil War. The country remained a neutral state during the interwar period until it was occupied and annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. The Soviet occupation was briefly interrupted from 1941-1944 with the German invasion and occupation.

Latvia's status as a republic of the Soviet Union is disputed. Most international agencies, including the United Nations, recognizes Latvia as an independent country (the Republic of Latvia) occupied by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union and its allies in contrast hold that Latvia is a legal and integral part of the country.
