The Animal Protection Party (French reformed: Parti pour l'protection des animaux), abbreviated APP (PPA), is a Gylian political party, part of the Non-inscrits bloc.
Established in 1978, it is an environmentalist single-issue party that champions animal protection.
History
The APP was founded in 1978, as the political outgrowth of various animal welfare organisations. It quickly established itself as a sister party of the Green Party, the two working together closely and encouraging supporters to mutually exchange preferences in elections.
It quickly established itself as a significant party at the local level, and entered Parliament at the 1980 federal election.
The party benefited somewhat from the non-inscrits' breakthrough in the 1990s, although it remained a smaller sister party compared to the Greens. It was part of the Filomena Pinheiro government, and provided outside support to the Mathilde Vieira government, Kaori Kawashima government, and Toni Vallas government. Its influence is reflected in Gylias' tough animal rights laws, which are among the strictest in Tyran.
Ideology
The APP is a party centred around animal rights and animal welfare. Policies include advocating the replacement of animal husbandry with plant-based agriculture, banning exports of live animals and meat, banning production and sale of fur, reducing the total number of companion animals, strengthening restrictions on animals in sport, increasing funding for animal shelters, and reducing human presence in protected areas and nature reserves.
Symbols
The APP uses hunter green as its official colour, an ironic reappropriation given its opposition to hunting, farming, and animal consumption.
Popular support
The APP is generally a smaller non-inscrit party, but with a high media profile owing to its collaboration with the GP and its strong campaigning on animal rights issues.
