The Sentinel Service (Magian:の守護者部隊; Shugosha Butai), often referred to simply as the Sentinels, is the military arm of the Seigi Kaikan of Magia Regnum.

History

The Seigi Kaikan was established in the aftermath of the Renaissance in Magia Regnum. As the society shifted away from a purely military-centric state, there was a growing need for a dedicated institution to uphold justice and maintain order within the rapidly changing society. The Seigi Kaikan was envisioned as a collective body responsible for overseeing the nation's military forces and law enforcement agencies, ensuring that the power was distributed among its members to prevent any one individual from holding complete control over the nation's security matters. As part of the Seigi Kaikan's comprehensive reform, two branches were established; the Sentinel Service and Inspectors Service. The establishment of the Seigi Kaikan marked a major milestone in the history of Magia Regnum, as it represented the first time that military power was separated from the position of the Proto-Master. The Sentinel Service, as the military arm of the Seigi Kaikan, was established and charged with responsible for the nation's defense from internal and external threats. Over the centuries, the Sentinels evolved from informal groups of magical girls into a structured and disciplined force Throughout history, the Sentinels have played pivotal roles in safeguarding the realm's peace, independence, and safety. They have over the centuries been involved in major operations against dangerous magical creatures, rogue magical girls who succumbed to negative influences, otherworldly beings seeking to breach the mystical barriers separating dimensions, and occasionally - but sparingly- against other nations.

Mission

the Sentinels focus on protecting Magia Regnum and its citizens from diverse threats, both internal and external. Their responsibilities encompass countering dangerous magical creatures, rogue magical girls susceptible to negative influences ("hoka"), and confronting otherworldly beings, such as the Sonohoka and their Otherspawn, who pose significant dangers to the mystical realm. The Sentinels are widely regarded as the last line of defense against darkness and hostile forces threatening the magical world. The Sentinels remain vigilant against interdimensional incursions, as their realm's unique magical energies may attract otherworldly beings. Their rigorous training and advanced technology allow them to discern and neutralize extraplanar threats, preserving the stability and integrity of Magia Regnum

In addition to their internal duties, the Sentinels extend their defensive actions to external fronts, combating potential threats from other magical and non-magical nations. Their exceptional magical abilities and combat expertise enable them to repel invasions, protect their borders, and safeguard the sovereignty of Magia Regnum from any adversarial forces seeking to exploit or encroach upon their territory.

Structure

Under the leadership of the Shuryō (Magian: 主要), currently represented by the Magical Girl Haruka "Honey Yohko" Asato, the Military affairs take precedence. The Shuryō is chosen from among the members of the Seigi Kaikan by the Haimajika, ensuring that the individual selected possesses the necessary merit and dedication to fulfill the critical role of safeguarding the realm. To provide support to the Shuryō in their multifaceted responsibilities, the Sentinel Service employs a structured command system. The core of this structure is the Military Commission, one of dedicated to coordinating defense efforts and safeguarding the sovereignty of Magia Regnum.

The chain of command flows from the Shuryo to the Military Commission, consisting of the Fuku-Shuryo and senior magical girls representing various branches. The Military Commission is led by Chairwoman Fuku-Shuryō Motozawa "Dancing Sun" Sadako, a highly experienced and capable magical girl. Assisting her in their roles as Vice-Chairwomen are Umi-Māsharu Samejima "Celestial Eclipse" Asa and Sanjigen-Māsharu Okubo "Cyan Night" Suki. These individuals contribute valuable insights and expertise in matters related to military affairs. Additionally, the Military Commission includes members such as Kūchū-Gensui Sumida "Day Breaker" Tomiju, Jimen-Gensui Hironaka "Dawn Titan" Azusa, Umi-Gensui Wakita "Shadow Shard" Tanaka, and Sanjigen-Gensui Kido "Divine Passion" Kiyumi. Each member represents different branch within the Sentinel Service.

The Military Commission holds a central position within the organization, overseeing the operations of the service branches and assuming command in times of war. During peacetime, their authority primarily revolves around policy formation and defense coordination. The chain of Operational Authority follows a well-defined structure, with the Military Commission at the top, passing directives to the Commanders of the several Operational Commands. These Commanders are responsible for leading specific units and divisions within the Sentinel Service and executing the Military Commission's directives on the ground. Each service branch's Chief of Staff holds administrative control over their respective services. This administrative authority allows them to focus on the day-to-day operations, training, and readiness of their branches, ensuring operational efficiency and effectiveness.

The Military Commission oversees and coordinates all military operations and activities of the Sentinels, ensuring efficient and effective execution of missions. The military departments and services, represented by the Ground Sentinels, Air Sentinels, and Sea Sentinels, are responsible for organizing, training, and equipping the Sentinel forces. While they have operational responsibilities within their respective branches, the actual chain of command flows through the unified combatant commands, ensuring seamless coordination and unity of effort. The Magical Girl Joint Command serves as the senior-most military body in Magia Regnum, and although it operates outside the operational chain of command, it plays a crucial role in strategic decision-making. Led by the Commander of the Magical Girl Joint Command, who is the military head of the armed forces and the principal advisor to the Shuryo and Military Commission on military matters. Assisting the Commander is the Vice Commander of the Magical Girl Joint Command. Other esteemed members include the chief of staff of the Ground Sentinels, the chief of Sea Operations, the chief of staff of the Air Sentinels, and the chief of Dimensional Operations. This joint leadership body collaborates to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to national defense, providing invaluable expertise and strategic insights to the Sentinel Service.

Deployments

The Magia Regnum Sentinel Service is actively engaged in a variety of crucial deployments to protect the magical girl realm. Their missions range from defending borders and countering external threats to intervening in the case of rogue magical girls succumbing to negative influences. One of it's more known actions is the large-scale deployment to defend the borders and protect the realm from external threats. The Sentinels are stationed strategically along key points of entry to deter potential invasions and ensure the sovereignty of Magia Regnum. Additionally, In response to an increase in rogue magical girls falling to hoka influence, this deployment focuses on intervening and offering assistance to those who have succumbed to negative forces. The Sentinels also engage in infiltrating the ranks of nefarious magical organizations, such as Atarashī Mahō, to gather intelligence and neutralize dark threats from within. Their specialized training in intelligence gathering and diplomacy enables them to navigate these shadowy territories discreetly. In response to natural disasters or catastrophic events, the Sentinels deploy to provide disaster response and relief efforts. They use their magical abilities to aid in search and rescue missions, protect civilians, and restore order in affected areas.

One of the most important aspects of the sentinels, however, is it's unique Dimensional Deployment and fighting off dimensional incursions. As Sentinels, their duty extends beyond the confines of their own realm, as they face the imminent threat of beings from other dimensions, most notably the Otherspawn. The Sentinels' vigilant observation and constant monitoring of dimensional disturbances are essential in detecting potential incursions. Through their efforts, they can anticipate and respond swiftly to any signs of dimensional instability, preventing breaches and keeping the mystical barriers intact. To safeguard their realm, the Sentinels respond proactively to these dimensional incursions. They undergo specialized training to combat otherworldly forces, honing their abilities to effectively engage the Otherspawn in battle. Their combat tactics are tailored to counter the unique abilities and characteristics of these inter-dimensional entities. Dimensional Deployment involves strategic operations where the Sentinels venture into inter-dimensional spaces to confront and counteract threats that emerge from these realms. The Otherspawn, dangerous entities from other dimensions, pose a significant danger to Magia Regnum and its inhabitants. These beings seek to exploit vulnerabilities in the mystical barriers that separate dimensions, attempting to breach into Magia Regnum and wreak havoc.

Ranks and uniforms

Within the Sentinel Service, The rank system follows a hierarchical structure, with each rank denoting distinct levels of authority and responsibility. This well-defined system allows for smooth command flow and ensures that decisions can be made promptly and efficiently during operations. One unique feature is the tradition of non-branch-specified ranks. This means that the rank titles are consistent across all service branches, emphasizing the shared identity and unity of the Sentinels. Regardless of their branch specialization magical girls in the Sentinel Service hold ranks that apply uniformly across the organization. As of the current organizational structure, the Magia Regnum Sentinel Service boasts a comprehensive rank system, comprising six officer ranks in the active, three non-commissioned officer (NCO) ranks, and three enlisted ranks. One noteworthy addition to the NCO ranks is the establishment of the highest NCO rank, Senior Leader, which took effect in 1378. This rank was introduced to address the need for increased promotion opportunities and shorter terms of service for Section Leaders. Prior to this modification, NCOs faced limited chances for promotion, often being promoted only twice during a lengthy thirty-year service period. Furthermore, once reaching the top rank, NCOs remained in that position for the majority of their service tenure thereafter.

The uniforms of the Magia Regnum Sentinels possess a unique blend of practicality, symbolism, and elegance. These robes are specifically designed to cater to the magical abilities of the Sentinels and to facilitate their mobility during combat engagements. The uniforms feature layered collars adorned with intricate motifs. At the waist, a cinched obi belt serves as an identifier for their respective service arms, with each color representing different branches within the Sentinel Service: red for infantry, yellow for artillery, orange for armor, violet for engineers, light green for ordnance, green for medical, blue for signals, brown for quartermaster, dark violet for transportation, white for airborne, and dark blue for others. This color-coded system aids in effective coordination and communication among the magical girls during combat situations. Crafted from lightweight and breathable materials, the robes prioritize comfort and ease of movement during intense battles. The flowing sleeves and strategic slits enhance the magical girls' mobility, allowing them to fully utilize their abilities on the battlefield.

Above the standard rank insignia, rank recognition is incorporated into the uniform design through the use of gemstones, ribbons, and bows. These elements add aesthetic appeal while signifying the girl's respective ranks within the Sentinel Service, fostering a sense of pride and achievement among the members. Traditional hair accessories, such as kanzashi, add cultural heritage and elegance to the attire of the Sentinels, complementing their overall appearance. Additionally, each girl carries a personalized charm, a symbol of her unique strength and resilience, serving as a source of inspiration and courage during challenging moments.

During combat engagements, the Sentinels take extra precautions to enhance their protection and fortify their defense against the myriad threats that confront the magical girl realm. To achieve this, they integrate a range of functional enhancements into their already meticulously designed uniforms. One main aspect of their augmented protection is the addition of plating strategically incorporated into the robes. This plating offers vital reinforcement, safeguarding the magical girls from physical attacks and potential harm. Incorporating ancient runes into their uniforms further enhances the Sentinels' magical abilities and strengthens their connection to the mystical energies of Magia Regnum. These runes, skillfully inscribed onto the fabric, channel and amplify their magical powers, empowering the magical girls to unleash formidable spells and defenses against any adversaries. Helmets and visors form an essential component of their combat gear, ensuring protection for the Sentinels' heads and eyes. These sturdy headpieces not only safeguard against physical dangers but also serve as interfaces to further assist the magical girl.

Recruitment and conditions of service

Enlistment in the Sentinel Service is a voluntary commitment, exclusively available to magical girls who reach the age of 18, while non-magical beings and Mahou Hojo are ineligible for joining. Upon enlisting, uniformed personnel are recruited as self-defense official cadets, committing to fixed terms based on their chosen service branch. Ground forces recruits typically serve a ten-year term, while those seeking specialized training in technical fields opted for a twelve-year commitment. Naval and air recruits, however, are enlisted for a fifteen-year term. For individuals aspiring to become officers, the path involved enrolling in an indefinite period of service. This included officer candidates, students at the prestigious National Defense Academy and National Defense Medical College, as well as candidates enrolling in technical schools. The duration of enrollment at the National Defense Academy and enlisted technical schools was generally four years, while the National Defense Medical College required a six-year commitment.

The service offers considerable pay to its members; the competitive compensation aims to attract and retain skilled individuals, contributing to the overall strength and effectiveness of the Sentinel force. Furthermore, the service prioritizes providing housing accommodations for its members both during service and after retirement. In addition to financial rewards and housing, the Sentinel Service extends various benefits to its members, addressing different aspects of their well-being. Healthcare coverage is provided to ensure that the Sentinels have access to necessary medical assistance and support for their physical well-being. The service also offered specialized training and educational opportunities, empowering the magical girls with continuous growth and skill development in their roles. The importance of family support is also acknowledged by the service. During deployments or assignments, measures are in place to offer assistance and care to the families of the magical girls, ensuring their well-being and alleviating any potential hardships.
