Settlement at Saruvia dates back to 862 BC, making it among the nation's oldest cities, and it has been continuously inhabited since that time. Saruvia was a member of the Triple Federation, the alliance which would go on to become the modern Amalfitan state and in which the city enjoyed considerable prestige as the dominant naval power in Amalphia.

Economy

The economy of Saruvia is based in no small part around its traditional shipbuilding industry. It houses the headquarters of several of Amalfi's largest shipwrighting firms, including Aquilifer Naval Engineering which has existed in the city since at least 450 BC, and Saruvian Maritime. Other major industries include heavy engineering and automobile manufacturing.

Saruvia's council maintains some of the strictest zoning regulations in Amalfi, aimed at "preserving the city's unique aesthetic charm" by directing most new development to the coast rather than the historic centre. Though this policy has been criticised for depriving the city centre of new investment and growth, it has served to make Saruvia's docklands a thriving business district as one of the nation's most modern commercial centres, with "glass and steel skyscrapers standing watch over the ancient port".
