The Typhon Contingency is a Syaran Military operation plan that details how the Syaran Commonality Armed Forces would prosecute a war with Ruvelka.
Background
Syara and Ruvelka have fought a number of wars over the course of modern history, the most recent being the Zemplen War which ended in the Treaty of Aragon. The ensuing peace saw the return of Zemplen and Imerti to Ruvelkan control, which many Syarans still see as rightful Syaran territory owing to the historical and religious significance to Syaran culture. Since the conclusion of hostilities, Syaran military planning has largely centered around for the possibilities of renewed hostilities with Ruvelka. Due to the numerous strategic errors made during the Zemplen War, Syaran operational planning largely focuses on avoiding an extended conflict and achieving a rapid strategic victory within short order; this typically revolves around either a rapid seizure of Zemplen and Imerti, or the forcing of a rapid collapse of Ruvelkan strategic posture to force Debrecen to seek terms.
Operations
During the Zemplen War, Syaran doctrine of Force Decimation largely focused on the repeated attack and destruction of Ruvelkan military forces under the auspice that sufficient damage done to Ruvelka's military would compel the Grand Principality to surrender. Syaran forces however lacked the ability to ensure large scale defeat of Ruvelkan forces without suffering severe losses of their own. As a result, planning for Typhon Contingency revolves around creating a strategic situation unfavorable to Ruvelka so as to force the Ruvelkans to either accept defeat or commit to an extended conflict.
The Syaran Commonality Armed Forces maintain a belief in the general conventional superiority of the VZS over the Ruvelkan armed forces, and thus the ability to inflict rapid defeats on the Ruvelkan military so as to gain a superior strategic position from which to negotiate a cessation of hostilities. The two most commonly cited outcomes are a rapid seizure of Zemplen and Imerti from Ruvelkan control, after which Ruvelka will be forced to either accept Syaran ownership or commit to retaking the regions, or a rapid drive on the port cities of Mátészalka and Aszód, as the loss of both would cut off Ruvelka from virtually all overseas trade. Some variations of the plan involve operations being carried out to both these goals, usually in conjunction or as alternatives depending the development of the situation on the ground.
Because of the defensive posture of most of the Ruvelkan armed forces, Typhon assumes that a substantial build up of forces would occur prior to the outbreak of hostilities, which would serve both Ruvelka and Syara in preparation for open conflict. To carry out offensive operations, the Syarans would mobilize the entirety of the Syaran National Forces, while also acting to bring all active divisions of the Syaran National Army (some of which are composed of organic reserve brigades) to full strength. This would bring the strength of Syaran ground forces to 1,400,000 men organized into 48 divisions across 19 Corps, which are themselves to be organized into six field armies. Additional reserves from the Syaran Strategic Forces would expand the size of the Army to 3 million men in uniform.
Upon the outbreak of hostilities, the Commonality Air Force would carry out interdiction strikes against Ruvelkan airfields, RADAR stations, and supporting military infrastructure to include ammunition and fuel depots, while also attempting to strike mobilized Ruvelkan forces to inhibit their own operations. On the ground, initial offensive action would be carried out 1st Army from Symmeria, crossing the Granika River into the Kunhegyes District with the intent of driving directly east while avoiding entanglement with the Ruvelkan cities of Kunhegyes and Kaposvár. The ultimate operational goal of 1st Army would be to threaten the port city of Mátészalka in northern Ruvelka on the coast of the Sundering Sea, drawing away Ruvelkan reserves from the center of the country. 1st Army would be followed by 4th Army out of Scitaria.
Syaran forces in Galania, consisting 2nd Army and 5th Army, would deliberately avoid large scale maneuvers against Ruvelkan forces in the center so as to lead Debrecen to focus on the pincer movements in the north and south. The initial attack by 2nd and 5th Army would therefore be conducted in a limited manner so as to create the illusion that the main drive towards central Ruvelka has either faltered, or is not the main effort. In Hayreniky, 3rd Army reinforced by 7th Army would carry out a direct southern attack against the port city of Aszód. Once the two main thrusts had developed, it is expected that Ruvelka would commit its strategic reserves to counter-attacking so as to prevent the Syarans from cutting off Ruvelka from foreign support such as Acrea.
Once Ruvelka has committed its strategic reserves, Syaran forces in Galania consisted of 2nd Army and 5th Army would carry out immediate offensive operations across the Balatonalmádi and Kiskörös Districts with the intent of overwhelming Ruvelkan forces in the center. 4th Army, previously assigned to support 1st Army on its drive towards Mátészalka, would instead pivot south to encircle Ruvelkan forces between Imerti and Sagerejo, linking up with elements of 6th Army in the Kiskörös District south-west of Sagerejo. Once encirclement has been complete, the Syarans would then unleash the full strength of 2nd and 5th Army towards destroying Ruvelkan forces in Zemplen and Kiskörös. Following the completion of these efforts, Zovahr would then be expected to offer terms of a ceasefire for Debrecen.
In the event that Ruvelka opted to continue the war despite the loss of Zemplen, 4th Army would then pivot back north and move to support 1st Army's drive on Mátészalka while 6th Army in the south would assist in driving Ruvelkan forces out of the Aszód District entirely. The Syaran Strategic Forces would begin mass call up of all available reserves, while Syaran forces in the center would dig into a defense-in-depth to force Ruvelka to commit to large scale offensive operations in an effort to drive the Syarans from Zemplen. After Ruvelkan forces had exhausted themselves doing so, the Syarans would then counter-attack with their fresh reserve divisions and commit to the destruction of Ruvelkan forces in western Ruvelka. However, unlike in Zemplen, Syaran forces would refrain from major offensive operations east of the Kaposvár-Kunhegyes-Sagerejo operational axis.
