The League of Equalists and Democrats was founded in 1983 through the merger of the largest center-left political groups in Amathia at the time, the Party of the Democratic Equalism in Amathia and the Pole of Social Democracy, as a direct reaction to the disastrous results of left-wing parties in Amathia's first post-1981 elections. This new alliance managed to win four out of the six seats of the Presidency in the 1983 elections, becoming the Amathian center-left's rallying point. It has remained one of the largest Amathian parties ever since, and it has been credited for a lot of reforms - protecting and modernizing the country's social welfare structures against the right-wing's indiscriminate hostility against all the elements of the former Equalist state. The LED was also crucial in Amathia's pro-EC orientation after 1981, and has remained a firm supporter of the EC to this day. The political fragmentation experienced by Amathia ever since 2000 has however forced the LED to cooperate and then to build a strong relationship with parties considered to be outside of the traditional Amathian left, like the UCD, which has in turn led to the LED as a whole moving further towards the center and alienating some of its more radical left-wing member. The LED is trying to recreate its identity in the middle of continued fragmentation and stagnant electoral results.
