The Nimabal K'iche or Nimabal Nimja (Mutli: "House of Greatness") were one of the three main aristocratic house of the old K'umakaj Kingdom and arguably the dominant one as they held the position of Ajpop, making them the rulers of the Kingdom and in charge of its administration and judiciary. The other two were the Tamub, who held the Clergy, and the Ilok'tab who dominated the state's military.
During the last days of the K'uy Dynasty, the Nimabal K'iche brought their kingdom to new heights, greatly expanding its borders by conquering the nearby states, such as the Kakchikel, Tzutujil, Mam, and the Achi kingdoms. The K'iche became one of the more expansive state of Northern Oxidentale, and was capable of protecting its borders against both the K'uy and the Kayamuca.
Through its alliance with one of the pretenders to the Divine Throne after the dislocation of the K'uy Dynasty, the Ajpop K'ukumatz was able to enter the Cousins War and conquered vast sways of lands for his allies. However, on the advices of her wife, the daughter of said pretender, K'ukumatz ultimately decided to claim the title of K'uhul Ajaw for himself and managed to do so the 8th May 1094. Despite its great military and political successes, K'ukumatz' rule as Divine King was short-lived and was succeeded by a period of political instability and familial infighting that lasted until his grand-daughter, Tziawilix, inherited the throne. But because of the patrilineal succession of the K'iche, this meant that her own son was not counted among the Nimabal K'iche but as part of Tamub Nimja, technically ending the 10th Dynasty despite an unbroken line of succession.
Althought the main line ended, the Nimabal K'iche House is still alive through a multitude of cadet branches. These includes the Kawkek, the Nijaib, and the Sakik. The Kawkek lineage inherited the status of "Great House" and still to this day hold the city of K'umakaj, the capital of the Yajawil of K'iche and other important administrative positions, while the Nijaib continue to play an important role in the cult to Tohil. The Kakawkek, a sub-branch of the Kawkek, are the dominant family of the Yajawil of Kupul and currently hold the position of Yajaw there.
