Analysis
Incumbent Ravy Egiði entered the campaign in a reasonable position, having maintained a good popularity throughout his term. However, opinion polls tightened as nomations closed, hinting at a tough fight.
Among the first declared candidates was Dana Tan, former finance minister and incumbent opposition leader. She chose to run hoping it would give Ensemble a boost in that year's regional and municipal elections.[1] Already known for her record as finance minister, Dana chose to base her campaign on foreign policy. She supported deepening the "muscular Gylias" policies of the Latte Revolution and reinforcing the Common Sphere.
The contest was transformed by the entrance of actresses Frauke Stark and Mai Thị Lan. Nominated by Love, Nature, Democracy, Frauke was the richest Gylian to run for the presidency, and was a household name due to her pornographic work. Lan had also built her career on portraying graceful and good-natured "beautiful elite" characters. The two's presence produced the nickname "election of wealth". Francité stalwart Amanda Leloup, contesting her 7th presidential election in a row, completed the field.
The campaign polarised into two unofficial camps. Ravy and Dana were the "serious" candidates, running on policy and their records of public service. Frauke and Lan were the "celebrity" candidates, running joyous campaigns based around socialised luxury and their existing fame. Frauke's campaign mimicked the successful campaigns of Marie-Agnès Delaunay, the richest Prime Minister. She financed her campaign personally, used the internet effectively, and produced polished PPBs with her trademark high production values and cheeky humour.[2] Lan followed a similar approach of highlighting her established public persona, but lacked Frauke's resources.
Opinion polls showed voters split four ways between Ravy, Dana, Frauke, and Lan, with Amanda trailing in last place. Public meetings revealed the polarisation: Ravy and Dana on one side and Frauke and Lan on the other. Each side maintained unofficial "non-aggression pacts", teaming up against their opponents. The Republic described Dana showing the "focused questioning and quiet determination" she showed as opposition leader in the Chamber of Deputies. Ravy's experience as a television presenter proved no match for Frauke and Lan's glamour. However, voters responded well to Dana's "razor-sharp questions and quiet dignity".[3]
In the first round, Frauke won a strong plurality of 40%, leading by over 4 million first preference votes.[4] Dana finished second, with 16,3% of first preference votes. Lan finished third with 16%. In a shock result, Ravy finished fourth with 15%. It was the poorest showing for an incumbent president, and the first time one failed to reach the final count. Amanda finished last.[5]
The first round map showed Ravy's weakness, as he only won a plurality in 3 regions: Nerveiík-Iárus-Daláyk, Ḑarna, and Nauras. Frauke won pluralities only in Mişeyáke and Tandar, but finished second in most other regions. Dana carried the traditional liberal strongholds of Arţia and Elena, and surprisingly won the northern regions of Salxarces and Gecar.[6] Lan won pluralities in 5 regions, the most of the first count candidates.
For the third time since 2007 and 2014, vote transfers changed the final contest. Lan received enough transfers from Amanda and, surprisingly, Ravy voters to overtake Dana. Most of Dana's voters transferred to Frauke, allowing her to defeat Lan by 60% to 40%, equalling Reda Kazan's 1975 victory margin.
On the final map, Frauke gained majorities in 12 out of 16 regions. Lan's regions[7] formed a diagonal line running south-east across the map, nicknamed "Lan's dildo".
