The Mutul-Ankat relations refers to the diplomatic relations between the Socialist Republic of Ankat and the Mutul. Once part of the Mutulese Ochran, Ankat still keep strong economic and cultural ties with the Divine Kingdom.
History
Shambalan Great War
The Mutuleses Nuk Nahob, or “Great Companies”, first arrived in Southern Ochran during the 16th century. There, they began trading with coastal lords and princes, who all maintained their own economic policies as their submission to the Green Horde -the then Hegemon of the region- being limited to an regular tribute. The Nuk Nahob notably managed to establish trade ports in the Terasi kingdoms of the Janatava Peninsula. Relationship between the Princes and the Mutulese were cordial, the Ochraneses selling cotton, indigo, textiles, ivory, pearls and other luxury goods in exchange for exotic Oxidentalese products such as chocolate, spices, silk, coral, feathers and sugar. This trade began to threaten the resources of the Green Horde, which was losing revenues and also seeing some of its vassals become more and more independent and wealthy and, thus, dangerous.
With the support of a strong coalition of vassals who were themselves rivals to the Terasi kingdoms and the distant support of the Latins, The Khan published a decree ordering all Princes to stop trading with the Mutulese, to break all contracts and treaties that binded them to the Nuk Nahob, and to close all trade ports they had opened. The Terasi Princes demanded an appeal, but their embassy was not allowed to see the Khan who had already declared their Princes to be rebellious.
The Mutuleses proved to be supportive of the Terasi, sending Pulaui, Tsurushimese, and Maori mercenaries to support their forces. The conflict escalated rapidly, even seeing the intervention of the Yu Dynasty following the weakening of the Green Horde. Ultimately, the pro-Mutulese princes saw their territories and organization consolidated into a single Kingdom which would be recognized as a Protectorate of the Mutul in the Naegima Accords.
The Protectorate of Ankat
As part of their policies toward veterans who served as marines and sailors in the Nuk Nahob, promising farmlands after 9 years of service, the Mutuleses began to buy lands in Ankat, especially in the less populated north of the country. There, these new "colonists", often of Janatāva or Pulaui origin, introduced with them important cash crops, such as coffee and tea, but also rubber, first imported directly from Oxidentale. The military of the new kingdom was organized by Mutuleses officers into three armies, the First and Second Janatāva Suwa, and the First Balung Suwa. "Suwa" was the Mutulese pronounciation of the Terasi word for "Service". These Suwa would end up playing an important role in future conflicts the Mutuleses would have to wage in the Ozeros region.
As the popularity of the Mutuleses was at an all time high after their support of the Ankati during the Great War, the theology of the White Path quickly spread and with it, Mutuleses knowledge in sciences such as agronomy, astronomy, and mathematics which were often kept in religiously-charged texts, further requiring adherence to the White Path to access them. Beside the convertion of the principalities, veterans and colons who arrived in the Protectorate had also adopted the White Path faith.
Convertion to the White Path was not seen contrary to the Tenets of Teras Kol, with Margaya being often described as more of a philosophy than a true religion, even by its adherents. After the First Shambhalan Great War, copies of Teras Kol's tenets were sent to the Divine Kingdom and were recognized as "Holy words" by the K'uhul Ajaw. The scrolls are still to this day preserved by the Central Library, alongside their original glyphic transcription.
From the cosmopolitan era that was the Mutulese Protectorate over Ankat emerged new and original artistic, scientific, and religious movements, taking as much from the Oxidentaleses as it inherited from Margaya. It's in this context that the "White Way", the Sudu Margaya, emerged.
Independence
Following the Arthuristan takeover of Maok'ab in 1840, where the Belisarian power forced the Divine Kingdom to cede its territories in Malaio, it became clear that the Mutul no longer had any authority in the Vespanian Ocean and was incapable of preventing the growth of either the Tsurushimans or Belisarians. Following this last setback, Regent Itzamnaaj B'alam began talks with the princes of Pulau Keramat and Ankat in the optic of granting these countries full sovereignty and independence. Agreements between these three countries were reached 1846 and became effective the same year. With the departure of the last Mutuleses administrators and soldiers, Ankat was now officially independent.
