The Ayar Congress is a supranational regional organization in western Ochran comprising the four nations of the historical region of Ayarna. Founded in 19XX, the Congress brings together the nations of Asazeh, Ganzak, Dzhuvenestan and Shirazam in the spirit of shared culture, regional cooperation and diplomatic discussion on regional issues. The Congress also serves as the supervising power of numerous sub-organizations, such as the International Ayar Games Committee (IAGC), which is responsible for organizing the eponymous Ayar Games.

History

Structure

The most significant body within the Ayar Congress is the Council of Ayar States.

Ayar Games

The Ayar Games, sometimes referred to as the Ayarniad, are a series of international games put on by the Ayar Congress' International Ayar Games Committee.

The Games began as an exhibition of ethnic sports, but have since broadened to feature other international sports. The current roster of sports at the Ayar Games include:

Showkan, Chess, and Wrestling are considered the 'Three Royals' of the Ayar Games. Other sports displayed during the Ayar Games include horseback riding sports such as Horse racing (including Endurance riding) and Horse trial. Similarly, other gym related sports often tied to wrestling have been added throughout the years, including beside Weightligfting: Powerlifting, Gymnastics, and Pole gymnastics.

The Games occur every 2 years and the host city is typically determined via a bidding process. A city (or that city's national government) may, however, bow out after receiving the honor of hosting the Games, at which point the IAGC is empowered to select a new host city via a consultative process.

Showkan

Chowgan, or Showkan, is considered the Ayar sport by excellence. Once part of the military education of the royalty, nobility, and steppe people, it is now a sport popular throughout western Ochran and beyond. Due to its prestige and ties to the Ayari identity, polo was one of the three sports the International Ayar Games Committees settled on for the first Ayar Games. However, the Committee decided to use not the typical 'polo' ruleset, but to revive the Showkan ruleset, seen as more traditional. Difference include that the mallet can be held in either hand, the field is thiner (250 metres long and 90 metres wide) and the duration of a game is different (two halves of 30 minutes). A team is four riders plus a backup. The captain of a team can demand a change of player, horse, or both, at any time during a game, but horses have to be replaced between halves. If a player is injured and there's no backup to replace him, the referee will stop the game for five minutes. If the injured player cannot return to the game during those five minutes, his team loses the game.

The Pan-Ayar Showkan Cup thus see national selections from every member and observer of the Ayar Congress compete in a Single-elimination tournament, the exact rules of which have varied throughout history with the number of participating teams. Due to its different ruleset, the Showkan Cup is considered an "Honor Competition" that doesn't influence the competitors' rankings in their respective Federations.
