The Piraean Radio and Television, AE (Piraean: Πειραιηκή Ραδιοφωνία Τηλεόραση AE) is the state-owned public service of television and radio in Piraea. It is headquartered in Alikianos and it is the oldest radio and television broadcaster with continious operations in Piraea.

It was created in 1940 in an effort to widespread information through radio in the rural First Piraean Republic. It gained popularity during its early years and became an effective republican communication tool during the civil war. It remained in place during the military junta period, owning the monopoly of official information, until in 1957, the television department was created and PRT became the first and only broadcaster in Piraea at the time. Heavily censored, it focused in news briefings and bulletins, developing towards series and regime propaganda towards the 1960s. Since the return of democracy in 1979, PRT has undergone several reforms, censorship was removed, management was democratised and its funding regularised and expanded.

PRT is a full member of the Euclean Broadcasters Group and its headquarters are located in Alikianos.

History

Piraea-1 in the facilities of PRT in Alikianos; the tower was built in 1989 and remained the tallest structure of Piraea until 2001.

The Piraean Radio Service was inaugurated during the early days of the First Piraean Republic as a service of bulletins that could serve republican militas in the country and the general population. Its headquarters were established in Alikianos, and soon it opened a small office in Voula, from where it was able to re-transmit to the regions of Samariá and inner Sitia and Foinikas. It was going to be a decade later, during the military government when the service included the first television transmission of Piraea, renaming the company to its actual form.

During the 1960s, PRT became a member of the Euclean Broadcasting Group, joining the Euclovision telecommunications network with ten minutes of the visit of the Secretary-General of the Community of Nations Seán Fitzgerald. Piraea was able to join the Euclovision Song Contest for the first time during its third edition in 1961, which was fully broadcasted from Gaullica. Although television faced several censorship and restriction in its content during the period of the Second Piraese Republic, with news bulletins being regularly checked by the Ministry of Interior before being broadcasted by radio or television, the channel was able to develop its capacity accompasating the Euclean technical developments of the time; in 1964, PRT stationed its first permanent foreign correspondent in Morwall, following others two in Hammarvik and Westbrücken. Years later, with the escalation of the Anniserian War, PRT launched its first international full colour transmission: 5 minutes from Madinat with images of the war in the Urí Margidda Niserian battlefront.

In 1970, PRT reached the whole Piraean territory and inaugurated several delegations outside Alikianos, and the same year, the company inaugurated regular PAL color transmissions with the Invictus Games of 1970 in Tosei, Senria. All of the programmation became transmitted in colour during 1976, launching it with the morning news bulletins of 5 May 1976.

Since the return of democracy

With the return of democracy in 1979, PRT suffered several changes in its organisation and general structure. Censorship was removed progressively as the channel broadcasted more content of Euclean origin. More ambitious projects and international broadcastings also took place, with PRT becoming a usual participant of the World Cup, Euclean Cup, Invictus Games and conflicts, like the Sostava War, which was the first to count with a regular live broadcasting by PRT on site.

With the advent of the 1980s and 1990s, the company sought to modernise its image and business model. In 1988, PRT+ (ΠΡΤ πλους) was inaugurated with new and more content. A year later, during 1989, the headquarters of PRT in Alikianos were enlarged and the Piraea-1 Tower was built, becoming the tallest structure of Piraea until 2001. During the 1990s, television and radio services as well as the management of infrastructure were demonopolised and high-definition television was attempted for the first time; the international channel, PRT Piraea was launched in 1996.

PRT was responsible of broadcasting the Euclovision Song Contest 2022 from ALK Box; it became the first broadcast in ultra-high-definition (UHD), 4K resolution and HDR quality.
