The 2022 Euclean presidential election was the 4th quinquennial election of the President of the Euclean Community. The first round of the election was held between 7 and 10 October 2022, but as no candidate won a majority of seats in the electoral college, a second round runoff was held between 4 to 7 November 2022, in which Vivien Vallette of the Socialist Alternative for Euclea defeated Georg Torleif Årbakke of the Alliance of Conservatives and Democrats for Euclea, and was duly elected as president. Vallette become the second ASE member and second Gaullican elected president.

The first round saw a lead for Vallette, considered the frontrunner, with 29.51% of the popular vote and 207 seats in the electoral college. In the popular vote, the second-placed candidate was the Avant candidate Emilia Koopmann with 22.32%, compared to 22.12% for Årbakke. Koopmann only secured 168 seats in the electoral college, however, compared to the 173 seats of Årbakke, so Årbakke advanced to the second round. This was a matter of controversy during the election, even when Koopmann conceded the race for second. The three major parties were followed by António de Armas of MNED with 10.00% of the vote and 71 seats, Brine Ó Scolaidhe of MVE with 6.65% and 50 seats, Amelia Ifriu of GRM with 5.48% and 43 seats, and Ạþelviġne Vycces of AEFR with 2.16% and 14 seats. No other candidate secured seats in the electoral college, and as no candidate secured a majority of 363 seats, a runoff was called between Vallette and Årbakke.

In the second round, Vallette beat Årbakke with 51.86% of the vote and 376 seats in the electoral college compared to his 46.11% of the vote and 349 electoral college seats. Vallette carried 7 of the 13 member states, compared to Årbakke's 6. The second round had a turnout of 63.61%, lower than in the first round, but far higher than in the 2017 runoff. Årbakke conceded the following morning.

Electoral system

The Euclean President is elected in an indirect election with an electoral college of 725 members. Each member state of the Euclean Community sends a slate of electors to vote for the president with the number of electors being determined by the population of each member state and equal to the number of MEPs the state sends to the Euclean Parliament. The electors are decided through the popular vote, with voters in each member state voting for a preferred candidate. Electors are split on the candidates they vote for in proportion to their popular vote percentage according to the D'Hondt method. If no candidate in wins a simple majority of 363 electoral college votes in the first round, a second round is organised among the two candidates with the most electors.

Foreign and Global Affairs Commissioner (2019–present)

The Socialist Alternative for Euclea held a primary to determine their presidential candidate using an electoral college. The contest was won by Vivien Vallette, the incumbent Foreign and Global Affairs Commissioner.

Campaigning for the primary began when Hermansdohter declared her intention to seek the nomination on 23 January 2022, but did not begin in earnest until June 2022, with Vallette announcing his long-rumoured candidacy on 10 June 2022 and van Bleiswijk declaring on 24 June 2022. The primary campaign focused heavily on the strength of incumbent governing parties, who had more seats in the college, including the Estmerish Progressive Social Democrats, which was seen as an unknown quantity. All candidates made attempts to court the favour of the PSD and other governing parties, such as supporting Zoe Halivar's Euclean tax coordination policy.

The final vote of the 151 member electoral college was held on 10 July 2022. Vallette secured an absolute majority of 85 electors, including those of the governing Estmerish PSD, Gaullican PSD and Caldish PSD and the influential opposition Social Democrats of Paretia, and was nominated on behalf of the ASE. Hermansdohter and van Bleiswijk both conceded, and urged the party to unite around Vallette.

Defeated in primary

Niina Hermansdohter (Arbeiderpartii - Azmara): Hermansdohter is the incumbent High Commissioner of the Euclean Community since 2019 and a former Thingspeaker of Azmara from 2008 to 2011. She came second in the electoral college vote, with 41 electors. In addition to her own party, she had secured the backing of the Amathian League of Equalists and Democrats, the Borish New Left and Workers' Party, and the Scovernois Social Labour Party. Hermansdohter suggested that she would be open to serving as a Euclean commissioner in any future administration.
Rupert van Bleiswijk (SAP - Hennehouwe): Van Bleiswijk is the incumbent Premier of Hennehouwe since 2017 and leader of the SAP from 2015 until November 2022. He came third in the electoral college vote, with 25 electors. He had the support of his own party, in addition to the Alslandic Progressive Alliance and Kirenian People's Party, the Kesselbourgish Labour Party and the Socialist Workers' Party of Werania. After losing the nomination, it was reported that van Bleiswijk was seeking the position of High Commissioner in a potential Vallette administration.

Premier of Scovern (2009–2013)

The Alliance of Conservatives and Democrats for Euclea held a primary on 20 August 2022. The only candidate was Georg Torleif Årbakke, a former Premier of Scovern, who was nominated as the ACDE candidate after a unanimous vote among the leaders of the member parties. This is in accordance with the unwritten rule of the ACDE primaries, in which other candidates drop out prior to the official vote in a show of unity.

Årbakke was not unopposed in his campaign for the nomination. The campaign began when Årbakke announced his candidacy on 28 July, followed by the announcement of Alan Baskerville's candidacy on 29 June. Patrice Laurent, Hepke Veltman and Eimile Ní Meachair declared their candidacies on the 1, 3 and 8 July respectively. Baskerville quickly emerged as the frontrunner, and campaigned primarily on his policy of a "two-track" Euclea to unite the ACDE on Euclean integration. Årbakke instead took a Euclosceptic view in opposition to further integration. It eventually became clear that Årbakke was the only candidate capable of beating Baskerville, and he secured the support of Ní Meachair and Veltman. Baskerville nevetheless retained a strong lead over Årbakke in terms of party support until the final week of the campaign, when the National Consolidation Party's Anton Raicevich controversially moved to oppose Baskerville. Baskerville withdrew his candidacy two days before the official primary.

Dropped out

Alan Baskerville (SDU - Estmere): Baskerville served as Legal Affairs and Rule of Law Commissioner from 2019 to 2021, and as President of Estmere from 2003 to 2008. He was considered the frontrunner for much of the primary, and his withdrawal was a major upset in the campaign. Baskerville has not made any official comment since Årbakke's official nomination.
Patrice Laurent (CG - Gaullica): Laurent served as Federal Minister for the Environment from 2019 to 2020, and was the Gaullican Conservative candidate in the 2020 Gaullican presidential election.
Hepke Veltman (NB - Alsland): Veltman is the incumbent President of Alsland since 2020, and was Premier of Alsland from 2018 to 2020. He supported Årbakke after dropping out.
Eimile Ní Meachair (PN - Caldia): Ní Meachair has been a Member of the Euclean Parliament since 2019. She supported Årbakke after dropping out.

Avant primary

Premier of Werania (2011–2013)

Forward Euclea uses a direct election among party members. The primary was held in two rounds, the first held between 22 and 28 July 2022, and the second held between 15 and 20 August 2022. The second round was between Liekele Ykema and Emilia Koopmann, the highest ranked candidates from the first round, with former Premier of Werania Emilia Koopmann winning with 56.72% of the vote.

The campaign informally began on 23 January 2022, when Ykema announced his candidacy. It was not until later in the year that other candidates declared; Asker Jonssun on 1 April, Cliamain Mac Diarmada on 17 June, Zacharie Blanchard on 28 June, Koopmann on 1 July and finally Rosaline Perrier on 4 July. Initially, Perrier and Ykema were seen as the frontrunners, with Koopmann and Blanchard seen as too disconnected from the party base. It became quickly clear, however, that the nature of the party membership had changed drastically, with the membership of Koopmann's Euclean Werania and Blanchard's PRCP both dwarfing that of the other Avant parties. The race narrowed between Koopmann, Blanchard and Ykema quickly, with Perrier struggling to keep momentum.

Eventually, Ykema was seen as the best chance to beat Koopmann for older members, and was seen as a more tenured right-leaning alternative to Blanchard. In the first round, Ykema came a distant second to Koopmann, with Blanchard a strong third and Perrier languishing in fourth. Ykema advanced to the second round against Koopmann. The debate of the second round centred around whether Avant should focus on courting voters to the left or right of centre. Koopmann was derided by some as a crypto-socialist. In the end, Koopmann won the second round with a strong vote share, and Ykema conceded defeat.

Defeated in primary

Liekele Ykema (LA - Alsland): Ykema previously served as Premier of Alsland from 2010 to 2018 and emerged as the main opponent to Koopmann in the race, advancing to the second round. He secured 23.23% of the vote in the first round, and 43.28% in the second. He conceded to Koopmann and supported her campaign. He then was asked to form another government in Alsland later in 2022.
Cliamain Mac Diarmada (Saoirse - Caldia): Mac Diarmada served as Euclozone, Financial Stability, and Financial Services Commissioner from 2017 to 2019. He was eliminated during the first round with only 1.74% of the vote.
Zacharie Blanchard (PRCP - Gaullica): Blanchard served as Federal Minister for Defence from 2018 to 2019, and was notable for having helped form the PRCP in 2019 with Coralie Barreau. His party emerged as a major new player within Avant. He came third in the first round, with 18.41% of the vote.
Rosaline Perrier (Reform - Estmere): Perrier served as Secretary of State for the Euclean Community from 2018 to 2021. Initially considered a major candidate in the contest, her campaign lost momentum to Koopmann, Blanchard and Ykema, and she finished the first round in fourth with 12.44% of the vote.
Asker Jonssun (Gyldflam - Azmara): Jonssun has been a Member of the Euclean Parliament from 2019 to present. He came fifth in the first round with 2.48% of the vote.

Foreign Affairs Minister of Paretia (2021–present)

The Movement for a New Democratic Euclea held a primary to determine their presidential candidate, which was won by António de Armas, the incumbent Foreign Affairs Minister of Paretia since 2021. De Armas was seen as a close ally of Paretian Premier Isilda Cerqueira, and his victory in the primary was widely seen as an example of rising Paretian influence in the right-wing bloc. He beat Hank Hankssun of the Azmaran Folkspartii and Simas Nekrošius of the Weranian Democratic Alternative.

Hankssun declared his candidacy first on 15 June 2022, followed by Nekrošius on 18 June and de Armas on 6 July.

Minister of Finance of Caldia (1997–2002)

The Green and Ecologist Movement held a primary with a popular vote to determine their presidential candidate. The primary was won by Brine Ó Scolaidhe of the Caldish Green Party, a former Minister of Finance. He defeated Carolijn Kippers of the Kesselbourgish Ecologist Party.

Ó Scolaidhe declared his candidacy on 24 June 2022, followed by Kippers on 1 July.

Minister of Labor of Amathia (2014–2016)

The Mixed Radical Left held a primary to determine their presidential candidate. The primary was won by Amelia Ifriu of the Amathian Left United for the Republic, a former Minister of Labor and Member of the Euclean Parliament since 2019. She defeated Florian Engelberger of the Weranic Section of the Workers' International and Christophe Robiquet of the Gaullican Section of the Workers' International.

Engelberger declared his candidacy on 16 June 2022, followed by Ifriu on 11 July and Robiquet on 12 July.

Florian Engelberger (OSAI - Werania): Engelberger has been a Member of the Euclean Parliament since 2014, and served as National Coordinator of the Weranian Union of Railway Officials and Trainees from 2007 to 2014. He condeded to Ifriu.
Christophe Robiquet (SGIO - Gaullica): Robiquet has been a Member of the Euclean Parliament since 2013, and previously served as Senator in the First Chamber from 2006 to 2013 and Senator Representative for Outreterre from 2000 to 2006. He condeded to Ifriu.

Leader of AEFR (2019–present)

The Alliance for a Federal and Regionalist Euclea held a primary to determine their presidential candidate. The primary was won by Ạþelviġne Vycces of the Party of the Swathish, a Swathish nationalist party which operates in Estmere, who has served as leader of AEFR since 2019. Vycces was a former State Minister for Education of Swerdia from 1976 to 1981, Member of Parliament from 1981 to 2003, Leader of the Party of the Swathish from 1994 to 2001. He has been a Member of the Euclean Parliament since 2004. Vycces defeated Marcello Schipani of Estmerish branch of Vox Euclea and the Gaullican independent Mathilde Pazany.

Schipani declared his candidacy on 3 June 2022, followed by Vycces on 10 July and Pazany on 15 July.

Mathilde Pazany (Ind - Gaullica): Pazany has served as State President of Casavie since 2019, having previously served as Senator in the First Chamber from 2012 to 2018 and Senator Representative for Casavie from 2009 to 2012. She condeded to Vycces.

Candidates

The deadline for candidates to apply for the ballot paper ended on the 28 August 2022. Candidates had to recieve a necessary 25,000 signatures from at least 8 of the 13 member states. On 31 August 2022 the Euclean Electoral Authority published the names of the 10 candidates who had recieved the valid number of signatures. The order of the list was determined by drawing lots.

Årbakke

Årbakke's campaign in the second round focused primarily on gathering Avant voters that had been lost in the first round. In several large states including Estmere and Gaullica, Årbakke failed to surpass Avant candidate Koopmann in seats won, relying primarily on large seat differents in his home state of Scovern and Werania to progress to the second round. The campaign emphasised in particular the youth and inexperience of opposition candidate Vallette, and Årbakke's personal experience in combatting economic recession in the mid-2000s as a response to predictions of an imminent continent-wide recession as early as 2023.

Endorsements

Ifriu stated her opposition to Årbakke without endorsing Vallette. Koopmann initially refrained from endorsing either candidate, before endorsing a vote for Vallette on 2 November.
