The New People's Party (French reformed: Nouvelle parti populaire), abbreviated NPP, is a Gylian political party, part of the Non-inscrits bloc.
Established in 1961, the NPP is a leftist party whose main agenda is economic nationalism.
History
The NPP was founded in 1961, as part of a proliferation of new parties after electoral reform.
It initially had a middling performance in the 1962 federal election, becoming one of the smaller non-inscrit parties. Its profile at this time was largely leftist, and it had good relations with the Progressive Alliance. Following the establishment of the Movement for Emancipation and Democracy, the two parties formed a political alliance, fielding joint candidates in the 1969 federal election and contemporary municipal and regional elections.
The alliance brought the NPP its height of success, but also caused a decline after the collapse of the MED. During the wretched decade, it was largely a marginal presence in Parliament. It supported the Filomena Pinheiro government.
The 1990s–2000s saw something of a revival for the party: its first preference vote recovered in federal elections, it increased its seat tally, and provided outside support to the Mathilde Vieira government. It also provided occasional outside support to the Toni Vallas government, although with less influence to leverage.
Ideology
The NPP's platform is based on economic nationalism, and it has something of a left-wing populist character. It is strongly opposed to free trade and globalisation, and its economic policies are statist, favouring public ownership of natural resources, economic planning, and use of extensive regulation to protect the domestic market.
Its platform is seen by commentators as influenced by Donatellism and Yurikarism; the Akashian media has characterised it as the Gylian party closest to the model of "centrally planned capitalism".
One of its famous slogans is "Gylias is open to people, not capital".
Symbols
The NPP uses the colour cream as its official colour.
Popular support
The NPP is generally a small presence in federal elections, with slightly better support locally. It is often perceived as a single-issue party, but with economic nationalism being seen as less appealing to a large audience than other colourful presences in politics.
At the local level, it has frequently been an ally to leftist non-inscrits and the PA, forming an unofficial leftist bloc in certain city councils. Its support is concentrated in urban areas, and it has little presence in rural areas.
