Montecara Pòrta Conìxia railway station (Montecaran: Staxiò Montecara Pòrta Conìxia) is the principal rail terminal in Montecara, serving nearly 15 million passengers per year.

History

The idea for a major train station in the center of Montecara was born in the late nineteenth century by officials in the Gaullican administration that then ruled the city. The Gaullican Empire had built out the first rail lines beginning in the 1850s, and by the 1880s there was a clear need for both a central station for the rails that crisscrossed the island and an interconnected shipping terminal that would allow for easy passenger and cargo connections to mainland Euclea. Pòrta Conìxia was intended to serve both of these needs. Passengers would enjoy seamless connections between steamships and local trains, with cargo shuttled back and forth just as easily. Planning began in the early 1890s, with construction starting in 1896.

The station was the first major edifice in Montecara to be built in the Stìl Dècora style that was coming into vogue in turn-of-the-century Euclea. The architect, Demètrio Ribi, was one of the most famous Montecaran architects of the era and went on to design public buildings in Paretia and Etruria, among other countries. Building was completed in early summer 1904, and the first scheduled passenger train departed the station at 10:11 on 8 June 1904.

A new era for the station began on 11 December 1963 with the opening of the Aurean Tunnels, allowing for direct rail service to mainland Euclea for the first time. In order to accommodate the new trains, a level had to be constructed under the old platforms perpendicular to the existing rails. Because the original station's rails were already mostly underground thanks to its cut-and-cover construction, the new rails had to be tunneled fully underground, resulting in an unusual three-story station layout with all platforms underground.

Services and connections

Intercity rail

The station is on the Euclostar and Trenalia networks. International services all run through the Aurean Tunnels under the Western Aurean Strait.

Regional rail

Five Viaurea lines terminate at the station, connecting Montecara to destinations in Luzela.

Rapid transit

VM provides rapid transit service to the station.

Ferry

In keeping with its original purpose as a ship-to-rail transfer station, Pòrta Conìxia has five slips for ferries, with routes to points around the Bay of Montecara and across the Aurean Straits. VM provides domestic transit ferry service, and a number of private lines provide international service to Tsabara, Emesssa, and mainland Euclea.
