Qualified teams in blue

The IFF voted at its meeting in Gatôn, Satucin in November 2015 to expand the 2023 tournament from 32 teams to 48. The slot allocations for the tournment were confirmed in Alikianos, Piraea in November 2019 along with the rules for the international playoffs.

Of the 48 nations that qualified for the 2023 IFF Coupe du monde, 27 competed at the previous tournament in 2019. Notable teams that failed to qualify included 2019 runner-up Nuvania, which missed the tournament for the first time since 2007 after losing a qualifying match to Nainan; 2003 champion Valduvia, which failed to make the playoffs; and Sainte-Chloé, which was knocked out by Tsabara.

Making their Coupe du monde debut are Bonaventura, Imagua and the Assimas, Île d'Émeraude, Nainan, Siamat, and Tsabara. Kuthina, with a world ranking of 71st, was the lowest-ranked team to qualify. Returning to the tournament after long absences are Satavia and Asase Lewa, which last participated in 2011; Ghamistan and Vinalia, which last participated in 2003; and Sohar, which last participated in 1999.

Numbers in parentheses are final positions in the IFF Men's World Ranking before the tournament.

Incidents

Injury of Isheanasu Chikwava

Soravian substitute forward Arseny Bazhenkov seriously injured Rwizikuran midfielder Isheanasu Chikwava by tackling him during a match on July 10.[5] Bazhenkov was given a straight red card after only two minutes on the pitch. Rwizikuru manager Oswald Hallam speculated that Bazhenkov, an obscure player at the international level, had injured Chikwava intentionally to remove a star defensive player.[6] Soravia won the match on a goal from Yevgeny Yusupov.[5] Medical staff found that Bazhenkov had broken both of Chikwava's legs, ending his football career for the forseeable future.[7] In an interview, Soravian manager Ilariy Kalin denied accusations that Bazhenkov acted intentionally, stating that the rumors were "silly," that Bazhenkov was "full of regret," and that "these things happen in sport."[8]

Pitch invasions

In the group stage game between the Asterian Federative Republic and Vinalia, an AFR fan dressed as a vulture invaded the pitch in the 79th minute, running around briefly before being tackled by security.[9]

Symbols

Mascot

Galinho the Rooster

The official mascot of the 2023 IFF Coupe du monde is Galinho, a rooster, who was revealed to the public in July 2020. He is described as a young, upcoming football superstar from Rémont who hopes to compete in the Animal World Cup. Shorts featuring Galinho and other animals from Zapoyan mythology playing street games were released weekly in the lead-up to the opening match. Galinho ends the tournament by playing a game against several quetzals, sacred animals in Tonatihcan mythology. Galinho is only able to win after Arturo Vasco joins his side.
