The national flag of Morrawia (''Morrawian: Morawská wlajka'') is a tricolour featuring three vertical bands coloured red (hoist side), white, and blue. It is known to Common speakers as the Tricolour (''Morrawian: Trikolóra''), although other flags are also so known. The flag is also known as the ''Union Banner''. The design was adopted after the Great Morrawian Revolution, where the revolutionaries were influenced by the previous flags of Morrawia and added a third stripe to symbolize their shared idea and sentiment: Republic, Equality and Justice. While not the first tricolour, it became one of the most influential flags in history. According to the many historians, Morrawian flag has historically stood ''"in symbolic opposition to the autocratic and clericalist royal standards of the past"''.
Before the tricolour was adopted the royal government used many flags, the best known being a blue shield and gold fleurs-de-lis (the Royal Arms of France) on a white background, or state flag. Early in the French Revolution, the Paris militia, which played a prominent role in the storming of the Bastille, wore a cockade of blue and red,[4] the city's traditional colours. According to French general Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, white was the "ancient French colour" and was added to the militia cockade to form a tricolour, or national, cockade of France.[5]
This cockade became part of the uniform of the National Guard, which succeeded the militia and was commanded by Lafayette.[6] The colours and design of the cockade are the basis of the Tricolour flag, adopted in 1790,[7] originally with the red nearest to the flagpole and the blue farthest from it. A modified design by Jacques-Louis David was adopted in 1794. The royal white flag was used during the Bourbon Restoration from 1815 to 1830; the tricolour was brought back after the July Revolution and has been used since then, except for an interruption for a few days in 1848.[8] Since 1976, there have been two versions of the flag in varying levels of use by the state: the original (identifiable by its use of navy blue) and one with a lighter shade of blue. Since July 2020, France has used the older variant by default, including at the Élysée Palace.[9][10]

This was later reused as the royal banner of House of Přemysl although with green background and a white eagle in 907, which can considered as national flag, although at this time, no sense of nationality and nationhood existed in the world. History

Flags and banners have been flying above Morrawia for a very long time. Fortunately for the people of Morrawia, very few times in its history, foreign banner flew above them. The first documented flag of Morrawia can be traced to its times under Great Bohemian Empire, where written description is available and describes "white banner with black eagle". This was later reused as the royal banner of House of Přemysl although with green background and a white eagle in 907, which can considered as national flag, although at this time, no sense of nationality and nationhood existed in the world. From that year, blue banner with a silver two-tailed lion was flown all across conquered Morrawian territories until the year 1268, when House of Carithia died out and discovered descendant of House of Přemysl took over as a a ruling house of Morrawia. Přemysl rule was long and so was the use of said flag. That was until the year 1574, although House of Přemysl died out 14 year prior. That continued until the year 1601, when the aristocracy was dissolved and absolute monarchy took its place, with House of Neutteburg as the reigning dynasty. Back than, flag with 3 vertical stripes of blue, yellow and white was used. When they consolidated all the power, Empire of Morrawia was formed with white, yellow and black stripe. This was the official flag for more than 200 years. When Tristan Palacký led the army of mercenaries and declared Republic of Morrawia in 1852, flag changed yet again as a placeholder during the war and then again in 1860 after the revolution. This new flag has three vertical stripes: red, white and blue in that order from left.

Symbolism

Symbolism of the current flag is rather simple. Blue colour symbolizes sky, sea and loyalty of citizens to the republic, white colour symbolizes purity and safety and red symbolizes blood of soldiers, men and women, who sacrificed their lives for democracy and the republic. As a whole, these colours symbolize 3 principals of the Republic: Freedom, Equality and Justice.

Display and Etiquette

These colours can be found everywhere. They are used in almost every logo, coat of arms or flag of federal government and its agencies and many other places such as public places or documents. According to law, every federal/public bulding and place must fly the flag aside of whatever institution owns the building, at all time of the year on at least 6 meter tall pole or from the side of the building. If the flag is to be flown as a banner, blue colour is on the top followed by horizontal golden stripe and white stripe on the bottom left and red stripe on the bottom right. On national holidays, citizens are encouraged to fly national symbols, but no mandate exists.
