The president of Morrawia is the head of state and head of government of Morrawia, directly elected to a four-year term via the popular vote. The officeholder leads the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the Morrawian Armed Forces. Since the office was properly established in 1836, 31 men and 1 woman have served in 32 presidencies. The first president, Tristan Palacký, won a unanimous vote. He was also the only one, who served more than two terms. Later he regretted the decision and told his successor to "serve for the more appropriate amount of time".
The presidency of Edward Soukup was rocked by the first impeachment and conviction of the sitting president. Pawel Záworský served as the first president after the so called "Democratic Union Era". Since the ratification of the Thirty-first Amendment to the Morrawian Constitution in 1942, no person may be elected president more than twice, and no one who has served more than two years of a term to which someone else was elected may be elected more than once, so the maximum of 10 years in office.
One president was assassinated (Karl Walmark), two died of natural causes (Lubomír Hant and and one resigned (Antonín Sád, facing impeachment and removal from office). Jan Rýnský was the first vice president to assume the presidency during a presidential term, and set the precedent, until the proper legislation was passed, that a vice president who does so becomes the fully functioning president with his own administration.
Throughout most of its history, Morrawian politics has been dominated by political parties. The Constitution is silent on the issue of political parties, though at the time it came into force in 1836, several political factions already existed. Soon after the 1st Congress convened, political factions began rallying around dominant Palacký administration officials, though he was concerned about the capacity of political parties to destroy the fragile unity holding the nation together. He was, and remains, the only Morrawian president never affiliated with a political party.
The incumbent president is Marcel Pelikán, who assumed office on April 15, 2024.
