History

Flags and banners have been flying above Morrawia for a very long time. Fortunately for the people of Morrawia, very few times in its history, foreign banner flew above them. The first documented flag of Morrawia can be traced to its times under Great Bohemian Empire, where written description is available and describes "white banner with black eagle". This was later reused as the royal banner of House of Přemysel although with green background and a white eagle in 907, which can considered as national flag, although at this time, no sense of nationality and nationhood existed in the world. This banner was flown up until the year 1000, when Morrawian Civil War, a massive 95 years long conflict, happened and when Morrawia fell apart. Some sources state, that it was flown up until the year 1095, but these claims are often disputed. Morrawia than wasn´t a formed nation with borders. The territory, which is today considered Morrawia was broken up between different small kingdoms, duchies and earldoms. 1225 was a turning point and that was when Wenceslaus I. from the House of Carithia began his conquest to reunite Morrawia. From that year, blue banner with a silver two-tailed lion was flown all across conquered Morrawian territories until the year 1268, when House of Carithia died out and discovered descendant of House of Přemysel took over as a a ruling house of Morrawia. But now, old eagle banner didn´t return and instead, blue and white vertical stripes, each of them being on the one half of the flag was back then the new flag of Morrawia. Přemysel rule was long and so was the use of said flag. That was until the year 1574, although House of Přemysel died out 14 year prior. That continued until the year 1601, when republic dissolved and absolute monarchy took its place, with House of Awstrowitz as the reigning dynasty. Back than, flag with 3 vertical stripes of blue, yellow and white was used. When they consolidated all the power, Empire of Morrawia was formed with white, yellow and black stripe. This was the official flag for more than 200 years. When Wolodimír Laweník led the army of mercenaries and declared Federal Republic of Morrawia in 1852, flag changed yet again as a placeholder during the war and then again in 1860 after the revolution, and similarly to the blue and white flag of Přemysel House, this new flag has these two features with golden horizontal stripe in the middle and red quarter on the white field.

Symbolism

Symbolism of the current flag is rather simple. Blue colour symbolizes sky, sea and loyalty, white colour symbolizes purity and safety and golden stripe in the middle represent unity of the regions, which are stronger if together as well as 3 principals of the Republic: Freedom, Equality and Justice. Red stripe symbolizes blood of soldiers, men and women, who sacrificed their lives for democracy. These coulours can be found everywhere. They are used in almost every logo, coat of arms or flag of federal government and its agencies and many other places such as public places or documents.

Display and Etiquette

These coulours can be found everywhere. They are used in almost every logo, coat of arms or flag of federal government and its agencies and many other places such as public places or documents. According to law, every federal/public bulding and place must fly the flag aside of whatever institution owns the building, at all time of the year on at least 6 meter tall pole or from the side of the building. If the flag is to be flown as a banner, every colour stays on its place, but the flag is extended a bit. This version also doesn´t include the crown. On national holidays, citizens are encouraged to fly national symbols, but no mandate exists.
