The Norvish Armed Forces ("the Defense Force") is the government agency that forms the armed forces of Norvinia, tasked with the defense of the country as well as with promoting it's wider interests, supporting international peacekeeping, and providing humanitarian aid. It consists of the Ground, Aviation and Naval element, as well as a military reserve force, the Home Guard. Since 1968, all Norvish military branches are organized within a single unified government agency, headed by the Chief of General Staff, even though the individual services maintain their distinct identities. The Chief of the General Staff is the Commander of the Armed Forces. In wartime, the Chief of the General Staff acts as the Commander-in-Chief on behalf of the President, who represents the Supreme Military Command of the NAF on behalf of the Grand National Assembly of Norvia. Coordinating the military relations of the NAF with other foreign ally member states and friendly states is the responsibility of the General Staff.
The Armed Forces are a professional military, conscription has been suspended. All military branches and specialties are open to female recruits. The Norvish Ministry of Defence employs over 164,000 personnel, including both civilian and military personnel.
