New Gough Island officially the Country of New Gough Island or less commonly known, The State of New Gough Island is a country in the southern hemisphere. The country is made up of a large island and a smaller islands. As of the 2024 census, the nation's population stood at 6.587 million. The country has a land area of 60,528 sq mi. The capital city is Port Victoria. While the largest city is Hartridge. The majority of the country's population lives on the highly urbanized South New Gough Island. While the North New Gough Island is highly mountainous and forested. The climate of the country is tropical monsoonal, with a highland subtropical climate in the mountains of the north island.

Geography

Climate

The Climate of New Gough Island is Tropical to Highland Humid Subtropical Monsoonal with a dry season and a wet season. Though there are considered 3 seasons: Wet season from late December to April, the Cool Dry Season from May through August, and the Hot Dry Season from September to mid-December. During the wet season temperatures are cooler but humid. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are very common. On days when there is no rain it is usually overcast and foggy in the mornings. Tropical Cyclones can occur during the wet season. The most powerful tropical cyclone to hit New Gough Island was Super Tropical Cyclone Wanda on January 5, 1972, which brought 20 in (508 mm) of rainfall in 24 hours and winds reaching 160 mph (257 kmph). The storm caused horrific flooding; the worst damage ever seen in a century from a tropical cyclone. Heavy rain events occur usually 1 to 3 times per year, heavy rain events are thunderstorms that drop more than 4 in (101.6 mm) of rainfall in a single day. The worst rainstorm brought 25 in (635 mm) of rain in 24 hours. on February 14, 1996.

The cool dry season brings mild to cool temperatures and low humidity. It is usually sunny and cooler with nice breezes. The coldest temperatures recorded happen in this season and cold waves can occur though they usually happen once per year. The coldest temperature ever recorded was 30 degrees F (-1 degrees C) on Mount Blandan on July 4, 1977. A dusting of snow also occurred on summit that day. Cold waves usually last a few days and rebound quickly.

The hot dry season is the most hot and humid time of year. Temperatures climb quickly reaching an apex in November. Temperatures can reach 95 degrees F (35 degrees C) or higher which can be considered a heatwave. The highest temperature ever recorded was 104 degrees F (40 degrees C) on November 18, 2020. Heatwaves can last on the low end 3 days to 14 days at the most extreme. Heat index can make it feel very hot and oppressive, the worst heat index was also recorded on November 18, 2020 with a dangerous reading of 122 degrees F (50 degrees C). Overnight temperatures rarely below 70 degrees F (21 degrees C). The highest overnight temperature was 86 degrees F (30 degrees C) on November 20, 2020. Thunderstorms increase in frequency as the wet season draws closer usually at the very end of November.
