The Hylian National Gendarmerie, more commonly known as the National Gendarmerie, is a Hylian armed force responsible for police missions, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas and on communications routes. It is under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior, but remains placed under the authority of the Ministry of Defense for the execution of its military missions.

The Gendarmerie is usually responsible for security in rural and peri-urban areas, while the National Police is responsible for this mission in urban areas. The two forces thus each have their own zone of responsibility, called ZGN for the National Gendarmerie, or ZPN for the National Police even if certain missions can be accomplished indiscriminately by the two forces throughout the territory (judicial police, maintenance of security). order or mountain rescue, for example). The ZGN represents approximately 53% of the Hylian population and 97% of the national territory (Costa Venta included).

The Gendarmerie carries out three types of missions in collaboration with the other Hylian police forces:

- judicial police missions; - administrative police missions; - military police and defense missions.

In 1887 following the inability of the National Police to maintain order in Nyria, King Francis decreed a state of emergency in the Nyrian state. Faced with the effectiveness of the military police, the Gendarmerie was formed by the royal decree of August 14, 1889.

In the 1970s, the Gendarmerie was under fire for its participation in the dictatorship of General Badanko, despite a law passing the latter, the Constitutional Council annulled the law emphasizing the importance of the Gendarmerie in rural and peri-urban territories. , the Director General at the time Sébastien Amenal will be sentenced to life for his participation in police repression.

Since 2012, the National Gendarmerie, which is part of the Hylian Defense forces, has also been attached to the Ministry of the Interior alongside the National Police and Civil Security. Placed under the budgetary and operational authority of this ministry, it nevertheless retains its military status. Certain units are placed for employment in the Ministry of Defense, such as the specialized gendarmerie, the Gendarmerie department of the historical service of Defense and certain seconded personnel. The National Gendarmerie and its personnel, however, remain under the supervision of the latter ministry concerning the military status of the Armed Forces and the majority of its personnel, military missions and external operations ("Opex" in military jargon) for missions provost and others.

Saint Geneviève is the patron saint of gendarmes.
