The Evangelical Methodist Church in Freice (Freician: Pakaragare Metoristi'ama Revonogaia’lu i Faio; PMRF) is a Methodist denomination in Freice and, as of 2021, the largest church and Christian denomination in the Country. The church was founded in 1953 when it formally separated from the Riamese Methodist Church and established itself as a separate body operating within the Riamese Methodist Conference. The split was largely driven by pro-independence and Freician nationalist factions that sought to use religion as a vehicle for their aims. The church has its roots in the Methodist missionaries who settled in Freice with Riamese colonisation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Although not the state church, the PMRF wields significant influence in society, due in most part to the large number of Freicians who are practitioners.[3]
Organisation
The Reformed Church of Christ the Saviour is organised into four different levels, called conferences: general conference, district conference, and village conference.[2]
The General Conference is the principal representative body of the church and has sole authority to speak on its behalf. An equal number of clergy and laity are elected from district meetings (bishops sit ex officio) and constitute the highest decision-making body of the PMRF. The conference elects a president from amongst the bishops, who serves as the head of and main spokesperson for the church. Between sittings of the general conference, a general committee is elected from amongst the members of the conference to undertake specified responsibilities.
District conferences consist of representatives of the clergy and laity elected from among the village conferences in each district. The district conference is responsible for policy relating to the administration of the church in each district, including matters relating to finance, the employment and oversight of church staff and clergy, and local social concerns.[4] District conferences are also responsible for electing a bishop, who is responsible for the oversight of ministers in their district.
The village conference is a meeting of a local congregation (currently eleven) for the purpose of making decisions relating to the organisation of the church at a local level. It usually consists of the minister and worshippers elected from amongst the congregation.
Overseas churches
There are two autonomous churches that operate within the PMRF but which are granted certain freedoms. These are the Evangelical Methodist Church in Freice - Ryume Church (PMRF-RP) operates in Hoterallia and the Evangelical Methodist Church in Freice - Church of Riamo (PMRF-PoR), which operates in mainland Riamo.
The Ryume Church serves the Freician community in Hoterallia (並外民の外国人公共; translit. Namimin no Gaikoku hito kōkyō), which traces its heritage to the immigration from the island in the 1920s and 1930s during and immediately following the Hoterallian occupation of Freice. Established in its current form in 1962, the church provides services to around 1,500 of the almost 2,100 Freicians resident in the country, most of whom live in Ryume Prefecture. The church is headed by the Bishop of Ryume, currently Rev. Ilipule Likama.
The Church of Riamo operates in mainland Riamo, including in the Unhak Island Territories. A large number of members are students and temporary workers, with major populations in Guri, Portington, and Swanton. The church also serves as the de facto representation of the PMRF in the Riamese Methodist Conference, with the Bishop of Guri (the leader of the PMRF-PoR) the designated member of the conference for the PMRF. The current Bishop of Guri is Rev. Dr. Selaulo Bisona.
