Future Citizens (Freician: "Tigetua'me Kenetasi"; TMK) is a political party in Freice. It was founded by public personality Kana Tenqel, developing out of the Freedom for Kana organisation set up to support him in his trial. It has been a member of the MURO Alliance-led coalition government of Prime Minister Aniara Neileka.

History

Background

The foundations of TMK are found in the "Freedom for Kana" organisation, which was set up on 23 February 2022 to push for a not guilty verdict in Kana Tenqel's trial. The organisation was a mass movement, with a particularly strong online presence, and support from Freicians and non-Freicians alike, benefitting from the international nature of the trial. On the conclusion of Kana's trial, Kana met with the groups organisers, thanking them for their support and pledging to use his "new-found notoriety" to benefit the Freician people.

A poll conducted on 11 March 2022 found that 30% of voters would consider voting for a party headed by Kana.

Founding

On 12 March, 3 days after being released, Kana formally registered his political party, Kana's Empowered Citizens, with the Electoral Council.

Principles and policies

TMK is generally described as a centrist party, holding moderate positions in social and economic policy. At the party's founding conference, party leader Kana Tenqel declared:

We are a party of freedom, of live and let live, of people who want to get on with life without interference. We believe that people should decide their own future, whether it be what they have for breakfast or what flag flies over them."

The party supports socially liberal policies, including a broadly pro-LGBT stance, the legalisation of abortion, and the decriminalisation of most drugs. According to Riamo News, most party members take a "thoroughly left-of-centre approach to most social issues", although there are a number of conservative members who are more hostile to certain progressive policies. These policies are often grounded in traditional Freician practices, with their approach to drugs and LGBTQ+ rights justified on the basis of pre-colonial practices.

The party is divided on economic policy. Some, including deputy leader Kiso Toma, support a more interventionist approach, whereas others, including Seime Etu (deputy prime minister and finance minister under Aniara Neileka advocate a laissez-faire agenda. There is broad support for foreign direct investment, and for the diversification of the economy to rely less on tourism.

The party is explicitly unionist, advocating for the maintaining of Freice's current status as a subject of the Riamese Federation. However, it maintains a strong emphasis on Hoterallia-Freice relations and actively promotes a more active and independent foreign policy in relation to Hoterallia and the Saltstil Pact.
