The 1940 Abortion Law legalised abortion in Xiaodong, with abortion being permitted in the to protect women's life and fetal defects. In 1959 it was repealed, and abortion was illegal until 1980 when the law was reintroduced and amended to give abortion in the cases of rape (1980) provisions for physical and mental health risks (1998) and incest (2011). Abortions must be approved by a doctor within 2 weeks and must be carried out within 2 weeks of doctors approval, being reduced from 6 weeks in 2011.
