Vescarium, officially known as the Mandate of Vescarium, is a country located on the planet of Anteria. Vescarium is mostly landlocked, though it controls a small corridor to the sea. It is bordered by Kiyortza to the west, Fichmanistan to the south, Askye and Zefristan to the north, and Shadoveil to the east and southeast. The nation's capital city is Satornia, which lies along the Sivuk Gulf coastline near the Shadoveilan borders. Vescarium is a diverse nation both ethnically and linguistically, hailing to the variety of ethnic groups of it's neighbors and the influence of foreign settlement in it's modern territories. Urban centers are concentrated along the country's natural rivers, man-made barge canals, or near deposits of rare resources such as diamonds.

Vescarium has been inhabited for thousands of years, first settled by migratory Elujõgi Inimesed along the fertile Elujõgi River in the north. Their empire eventually fell apart around the turn of the second millennia, when waves of migratory Lorfier settlers poured into the southern hinterlands of the Empire. Statelets and fiefdoms quickly formed around groups of settlers, and as the northern Empire crumbled, northward expansion by Lorfier settlers followed.. For hundreds of years the region's states would be in flux, with the Duchy (and later Republic) of Vescarium rising to prominence at the end of the 17th century. The Duchy underwent a series of upheavals that saw it become the dominant power during the early 18th century.

The Commonwealth of Vescarium was not officially unified under one political entity until 1877, when the Republic of Vescarium was able to peacefully unify the disparate states of the region, being that the nations around them were stronger and could invade and revoke the sovereignty of these states under their banners, which the small kingdoms and republics could not allow, instead submitting to a democratic Commonwealth of local states with significant autonomy at first, though this would slowly be restricted up until the 1946 First Vescarian Civil War. In the aftermath of such a catastrophic conflict, Vescarium underwent several decades of reconstruction before befalling yet another crisis, yet even this was resolved. Today, the country is recovering from a third such event, the Elujic Bush War.

Etymology

The term 'Vescarium' is an outdated Common exonym for the city of Escjârive, the traditional seat of power in the country. It is believed that the city was founded by the semi-mythical Esces the Founder, from which the name is derived.

History

The history of Vescarium is long and diverse, containing many different groups of people fighting over the land's resources and oftentimes doing more internal squabbling than anything else. Despite this tendency towards domestic tension, however, the remarkable rise of Vescarium as a nation-state is in spite of these factors. To fully understand the modern Vescarian state, the full history of the region must first be understood.

Pre-Romance Vescarium

Not much is known about the early migratory history of groups in Vescarium prior to the 600s AD, though anecdotal evidence of a nomadic society living in the region around that time is known to historians. Sometime in the early 600s, we can definitively say that the Elujõgi Inimesed ethnic group were present, and that some settled states were beginning to form around the middle of that century. It wouldn't be for another 150 years that a major power would form along the Elujõgi River, when the Elujic Empire swept much of the basin, claiming it for itself.

The empire was generally a time of peace, as the traditionally nomadic peoples had begun settling down as their ruling authority attempted to centralize. This led to the formation of important cities such as Ühendavlinn, Lääneserv, and Suuinn. The growth of towns and the consolidation of the Empire allowed for a flourishing of Elujõgi culture, however it was not built to last. Regionalism and factionalism still ran deep, and many traditionalists were growing increasingly concerned at the Empire's attempts to settle the traditionally wandering population.

Lorfier Settlement

Around the year 1000 CE, the Elujic Empire was beginning to buckle. It's golden age had long side faded, and internal divisions were tearing the country apart. The final nail in the coffin, however, came from the south. The Lorfier are a people who trace their roots to southern Kiyortza, alongside the Riyaki ethnic group. Within the next few decades, they would wreak utter havoc on the dying Elujic Empire.

Seeing the collapse of the Elujõgi state into localized petty kingdoms, the Lorifer poured across the gap south of the Vaali Mountains and into the deserts south of the empire, looking to carve pieces of it for themselves. A smaller group of Riyakis joined them, and over the next few centuries the entire south of what is now Vescarium was settled with sparse Lorifer settlements near desert oases, with Riyaki activity consolidated around the foothills of the Vaalis.

Lorfier legend has it that in 1146, Esces the Founder, a discipe of the Lorfier's native faith, personally selected the land that would become the City of Esces, which would eventually be colloqualized to Escjârive. Being in such an arid region, however, the local power centers that Esces and his contemporaries created would not see regional prominence for the next 600 years.

Nevertheless, the new geopolitical order of the region crystalized rather quickly. Elujõgi states would frequently clash with the new arrivals, and the Lorifers often fought amongst themselves over the few resources of their harsh region. Local authorities such as the Duchy of Vescarium, the Principality of Oriete, and the Duchy of Ôcja emerged around the end of the so-called "Conquest Period" of 962 (the first major exodus of Lorifers into the region) through 1208 (with the final dissolution of the Elujic Empire).
