Nathair, officially the Republic of Nathair, is a country in northwest Rennakka. It is borded by Vidoria to the east, the Opal Ocean to the north, and the Jade Ocean to the west. The country is divided into three districts, the Anehengul, the Cuirpthean coast, and a small communist district exists along the western coast. Nathair is almost entirely rainforest, with sections of swamp and mangrove forest along the coasts. Fishing makes up a big part of the Nathairean economy, but the ocean stocks of fish are beginning to be over-fished.

Etymology

Nathair comes from the Cuirpthean word for snake, referring to the watersnakes seen by the first Cuirpthean explorers of the region. Tenegam Tabusu is a combination of Tenegam, the name for the tribes which is of unknown origin, and Tabusu, the word for a collection of villages.

History

Prehistory

In 100 BC, the first records of travel from across the sea appear in Tetelen records. First agriculture and fishing signs appear in Nathair region. Oral traditions talk of a "great upwelling grip of water" off the coast during migration to modern-day Nathair, probably referring to Yramo, the place where the Black River meets the ocean, at the dropoff point. At least 23 tribes have been confirmed to have vocal traditions dating back to this point, based off records of this "great upwelling grip" and the geological survey of the area that determined there likely was at one point a whirlpool in the area.

Middle Ages

A loose alliance of tribes begins to form, especially between those on the coasts. The first major settlement is formed, in the area now known as the Yahenge lakes region. Jade tool parts are found throughout the coastal region, and an endemic camain species goes extinct.

Colonial

During colonial times, Nathair was conquered by Cuirpthe, with the coastal region being completely overwhelmed. A successful defense by a militant sector of the Yahenge alliance results in colonization only occuring along the coasts, with most natives forced into the inland and lakes regions. The alliance between the various tribes developed into something like a republican oligarchy, with each tribal leader voting to determine the leader.

Great War

During the Great War, the Yahenge Alliance took over the coasts of the country, effectively shutting out Cuirpthe and putting the Cuirpthean areas under military control. These militarized zones lasted until the end of the inter-war period, during which they became part of the unified effort to stop the rise of communism in Nathair.

Geography

Climate

Nathair is firmly within the tropical zone, with temperatures typically ranging from 20 to 32 degrees. Nathair experiences hurricanes on a semiregular basis, being near the ocean, and features the .

Biodiversity

Nathair is extremely biodiverse, especially in the inland areas fufilling the requirements of a mega-diverse country. Nathair features many endemic species, such as the Rusty Crake, the Scissortail hummingbird, and the Cuirpthean Velvet Worm, having one of the highest total species counts in all of Rennakka.

Environment

Nathair features four major environmental zones. The Nathair Coastal region features beach ecosystems, intermixed with mangrove forest. The Ytaba Lakes region features brackish swampland and marsh intermixed with brackish and freshwater mangrove species. The Inland Nathairean Forest Zone contains tropical lowland rainforest, fed by numerous rivers. The Catatumbo Mountain area features the beginnings of transition to cloud forest biomes.

Politics

Administrative Divisions

Nathair is divided into three administrative districts, each with their own lesser government determined by the individual province. Each of these governments, however, are subject to the authority of the President for Life, elected on a lifetime basis by the heads of the admitted parties. The admittance of parties into the system and allocating votes is the authority of the Dual Council, which has three members, appointed by each of the three provinces.

Foreign Affairs

Nathair makes a point of avoiding interference in the territorial claims of other countries. Throughout its history Nathair has been working to maintain a lack of foriegn investment into the country. It is only very recently that Nathair opened its borders to the investment of outside countries, although this is simply to negotiate trading of rare earth metals. The coastal region has been in a period of salutary neglect for something close to 50 years, although there is beginning to be more oversight into the region's interactions with the rest of the world.

Military

The military of Nathair is very small, with around 12000 personnel, mostly stationed around the capital, Tenexam. This does not reflect, however, the number of soldiers in Nathair, mostly employed by private defense contractors, theorized to be around 25000 in total.

Economy

Agriculture

Much of the country focuses on subsistance agriculture, growing tubers and tending to fruit trees. Nathair has some of the world's hottest peppers, from a set of farms in the inland country who grow both culinary and military-grade peppers. In the coastal region, there still remains cotton and tobacco farms. Fish farming of both traditional and modern styles is theorized to be one of the primary food sources, feeding around 60% of the population, supplemented by either farming. hunting or imported meats.

Transport

Transport in Nathair is very developed along the coast, with ferries and buses common, but inland transportation networks decline in quality severely. Buses are often the only things on the poor roads to the interior of the country, and they commonly feature delays in service based on weather and road blockages.

Energy and infrastructure

Science and technology

Tourism

Tourism in Nathair is highly limited by government regulation on construction, leading to the vast majority of tourism to be limited to the coastal region.

Sports

Machete fencing of both Tenetam and colonial Arabekhi forms exist within Nathair, and their leagues are held in very high regard within the country, although this sport has not spread to many other countries. Additionally, there is a small football league within the country, although the national team does not perform extremely well in established tournaments outside of the country.

Cuisine

The cuisine of Nathair is by and large based around fish and fish-related dishes. The coastal region is influenced incredibly strongly by Cuirpthean cuisine, often featuring local fish stewed with potatoes, plantains, or cassava tubers. Those wealthy enough to afford imported food will often replace some of their diet with wheat or potato-based foodstuffs.
