Proto-Diachoric Grammar

  • (C)V(N) or (C)V(Q) for the min and max syllable structure. Nasals are the only consonants allowed in the coda however the next consonant may be geminated.
  • Animate/inanimate gender with third person pronouns animate *yu and inanimate *na.
  • Tripartite (Ergative, Accusative, Intransitive) and possessed/possessive cases.
  • Perfect vs. Imperfect aspect system (tense is largely denoted lexically).
  • Free Word Order (wahoo), VSO is the basic word order.
  • Long vowels are formed via diphthongs.
  • Head marking.
  • Unmarked Collective (Plural Uncountable) vs. marked Singulative (Singular Countable) number system.
  • Verbs do not inflect person but pronouns have clitic forms when next to the verb: *ma, *ta, *yu, *na.
