The Allied States of the Mist Carthara Islands, most commonly known as the Mist Carthara Islands, is a nation located in the southern Toyana Ocean, an archipelago state branching off the greater continent of Antartique. The nearest national boundary is Zaheerstan, although periodically inhabited islands, such as Zamastanian and Yuaneze-owned airstrip reefs, are also geographically close relative to other countries. The Allied States is a member of multiple international organizations, including the Southeastern International Association of Adula and the Coalition of Crown Albatross.
The islands are believed to have been occupied by native peoples for 30,000 years before Beleroskovian colonization. It is thought that native Mist Cartharans were separated from the Adula mainland native groups about 11,700 years ago after the sea rose to form Gabriel Sea. The native population is estimated to have been between 3,000 and 7,000 at the time of colonization, but was almost wiped out within 30 years by a combination of violent guerrilla conflict with settlers known as the "Mist War", intertribal conflict, and from the late 1620s, the spread of infectious diseases to which they had no immunity. The islands were permanently settled by Adulans in 1803 as a penal settlement of the Skithan Empire to prevent claims to the land by the Beleroskovian Empire in the wake of the Zamastan War of Independence. The islands became a separate, self-governing colony under the name Marc's Land (named after Timothee Bel Marc) in 1825. In 1854 the present Constitution of the Mist Carthara Islands was passed, and the following year the colony received permission to change its name to Mist Carthara, and was granted independence in 1857.
Despite its isolation and desolate location, the islands are populated by 74,000 people, more than 60,000 of which live in the capital of Ninea Point. The climate is harsh and chilly with frequent high winds throughout the year. The surrounding seas are generally rough and they remain mostly ice-free year-round.

Climate
Mist Carthara's climate is oceanic, cold, and extremely windswept. Under the Köppen climate classification, Mist Carthara's climate is considered to be an ET or tundra climate, which is technically a form of polar climate, as the average temperature in the warmest month is below 10 °C (50 °F). All climate readings come from the Ninea Point weather base, which has one of the more favorable climates in the islands because of its proximity to the coast, metro area, and its location in a gulf sheltered from the wind. The average annual temperature is 4.9 °C (40.8 °F) with an annual range of around 6 °C (11 °F). The warmest months of the year include January and February, with average temperatures between 7.8 and 8.2 °C (46.0 and 46.8 °F). The coldest month of the year is August with an average temperature of 2.1 °C (35.8 °F). Annual high temperatures rarely surpass 20 °C (68 °F), while temperatures in winter have never been recorded below −10 °C (14 °F) at sea level.
Mist Carthara receives frequent precipitation, with snow throughout the year as well as rain. Ninea Point receives a modest amount of precipitation (708 mm (27.9 in) per year) compared to the west coast which receives an estimated three times as much precipitation per year. The mountains are frequently covered in snow but can thaw very quickly in rain. Over the course of several decades, many permanent glaciers have shown signs of retreat, with some smaller ones having disappeared completely. The west coast receives almost continuous wind at an average speed of 35 km/h (22 mph) because the islands are between the 40 and 50 latitudes. Wind speeds of 150 km/h (93 mph) are common and can even reach 200 km/h (120 mph). Waves up to 12–15 m (39–49 ft) high are common, but there are many sheltered places where ships can anchor.
