Vuku (Aanyaka: Vuku /vú.kú/), officially the Republic of Vuku (Aanyaka: Vuku Vungànyèbĩ /vú.kú vú.ŋà.ɲɘ̀.bĩ́/), is an island state and archipelago on the southwestern rim of the Toyana Ocean. It is located to the south of Kahului-Kanau, east of Baystate, and northwest of Mist Carthara Islands. Its five islands total about 4,050 km² (1,564 mi²) in land area, making it among the smallest sovereign states on Iearth; about one third of the country’s nearly 200,000 inhabitants live in the metro area of Bajitika, which is its economic center, while Vukeba is the nation's judicial capital.
The first migrations of Proto-Aanyaka-speaking settlers to present-day Vuku are commonly accepted to have occurred approximately 5 kya, but evidence of human habitation in the area dates back to 15 to 20 kya, and it is believed that these predecessors of the Ibavuku were separated from other groups in Adula after rising sea levels isolated the southeastern Adulan lands circa 12 kya.
Vuku's climate is dominated by short, mild summers contrasted with long but manageably cool winters, generally classified as temperate (Cfb) or subtropical (Cwb) oceanic. Precipitation, including snowfall and sleet, is commonplace, and monthly averages rarely reach above 22 °C (72 °F), while the coldest months of the year hover around or below freezing (0 °C, 32 °F). Despite this, Vuku hosts diverse flora and fauna, including many bird species such as puffins and seabirds as well as introduced land species such as sheep, hares, martens, and foxes.
Vuku boasts comparatively high civil and political freedoms; however, despite strides in political transparency and anti-corruption initatives, Vuku is a developing country, measuring fairly low on indicators of human development. Current challenges include sustainable economic expansion, resource management, and advancements in telecommunications infrastructure.
Etymology
The name Vuku derives from the Aanyaka ku "fruit," along with the noun class marker vu- representing locations or large expanses; thus, roughly translated, Vuku means "land of fruit." This word was fossilized as a placename sometime in the early 1st century CE, hence the demonym Ivuku (pl. Ibavuku).
