After the collapse of The Empire, it was greatly reduced and all personell was either executed or discharged. On the verge of the 20th century, the army had begun expanding and reached its peak during The Great War. After that, it stayed consistently big until the year 1954, when the conscription was abolished under Military Reform Act of 1954. This, as a result, decreased dramatically the size of the military and today contains about 450 000 soldiers.
