Officer Ranks of the Imperial Army (Tagmatium)

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Listed in the table below are the insignia - emblems of authority - of the Imperial Army. The insignia has changed significantly over the years, evolving from ones used by the historic Aroman Army to ones that resemble those of other, modern armed forces during the Kommenan Reforms. They settled into their modern appearance during the Long War, which saw many of the emblems simplified in order to aid production. Insignia is worn on epaulettes on parade uniforms whilst it is on the chest on the daily, working uniforms and on battle dress.

Notes

There are numerous variations of several ranks. The various branches of the Imperial Army use differing titles for some ranks; the ranks of the Noumeroi and the Palatinoi have been given here, as the most commonly encountered branches of the Imperial Army. The Noumeroi and the Palatinoi differ on the name of the senior subaltern rank and the company commander rank. The former uses Axiomatikos and Illarkhes for the rank in infantry and cavalry units whilst the latter uses just the one, Akothoulos, for it. The the company commander rank, the Noumeroi use Pentekontarkhos and the Palatinoi use Kentarkhos.

Despite both of the Foussatores and the Vestiaritai being part of the Imperial Army, their ranks are not given here. The rank structures of those organisations are very different due to their roles as border guards and coast guards rather than true combat units.
