Etymology

The name Qarau means "land of seven" in Qaraic, referring to the Seven Dumaaqs which invaded the Siltsk Empire in 1895 and established the United Dumaaqdoms of Qarau. Qarau is also known by several other names in historical sources, including Heptia (a calque of Qarau) and Rubrumontia (land of the Red Mountains). The name "Qarao" is a frequent misspelling of Qarau, and the United Dumaaqdoms of Qarau have officially advised against its usage.

Geography

The Maqda Mountains on the Outer Kuulna Steppe

The vast majority of Qarau's land area is occupied by the Kuulna Steppe, a vast expanse of valleys, grasslands, and deserts. The steppe possesses extreme temperatures, consistently reaching highs of 35°C in the summer and lows of -10°C in the winter.

Despite the size of the Kuulna Steppe, the majority of Qarau's population is concentrated in the Siltskia region, due to a much more temperate and humid climate.

Siltskia and the Kuulna Steppe are divided by the Red Mountains, Qarau's largest mountain range.

History

The region composing the modern borders of Qarau have been inhabited for at least 6,000 years. However, the current state can be traced back to 1835, wherein the Seven-Banner Dumaaq conquered the Siltsk Empire and established the United Dumaaqdoms of Qarau.
