Etymology
- Varanus (genus of the Komodo dragon) or Varanidae (family)
- Dragonryders = some weird Anglish name, influenced by myth. Those big Komodo dragon and perhaps smaller Pygmy peoples might have led to this myth. Or perhaps there is some old custom where the males had to prove their bravery by mounting one of these Komodo's. And ancient explorers might have used that story to name the area after it.
- Sometimes also called Ophiussa ("land of serpents") in Aroman language. This name is unrelated to Oyussa.
