The state of Centavo gets its name from Gobet Centavo, the son of a prominent merchant family, who lived in 1215. The word Centavo comes from the emerging language at the time, Monetok. It can be broken into three parts: "cen" "ta" and "vo." The word cen means "heart", ta means "hard", and "vo" means son. Together, it means son hard heart or "son of hard heart." The term "hard heart" is often taken to mean "brave" or "courageous" as having a hard heart means one that will not quiver in fear.
The "vo" in Centavo is actually the earliest known use of the word "vo" in conjunction with a family name. Gobet Centavo was said to be a highly individualistic man who would've preferred to name the then republic after himself.
