Maimi is an overseas territory of the Kingdom of Seylos WIP

Etymology

History

While many nations that Seylos had diplomatic relations with had turned to colonizing lands in other continents, Seylos itself did not yet own any overseas territories. There were discussion amonst the Royal Council regarding the possibility of aquiring colonies, however most on the council found the concept of conquering foreign lands for their own as morally objectionable. Still however, Seylos could see that its peers on the internation stage were growing their hold across Alharu and Aurelia and discussions were held on how to ensure Seylosian presence in these regions. Interest was peakled however when a Seylosian explorer and businessman, Skylar Woodrow had independently purchased large quantities of land in Esonice and had setup a rice farming collective. At the time, rice had become a high class status symbol and was served at large meals since the crop wasn't grown in Seylos. Due to the lack of any known natural resources in the area, the Seylosian crown entered into negotiation to purchase the land from Esonice, for a total of 250,000 Seylosian pounds, the equivalent of 36 million pounds Seylosian today.

After the purchase, the Crown allowed Skylar Woodrow to continue their farming operations in the area and began to build extensive trading port facilities on the land. The possibility of exclusive new land for Seylosians to settle on drew a large amount of people from the home island, and soon the port became an important location for trade back to Eastern Argis. Despite Esonice closing itself in the 1830s, Seylos managed to maintain a mostly cordial relation with the country which led to many immigrants into the territory.

During the rise and subsequent fall of the Seylosian Mandate government in the mid 1940s to early 1950s Maimi declared its support for the Royalist government in exile and ejected any pro-Mandate groups from its territory, alongside Kaseka.

Geography

An overview of Maimi as seen from its eastern most coast.

Maimi features mostly flat terrain around the coast, with shilly terrain on the borders of the city dedicated to the centuries old rice production. The majority of the city lies along the coast, of which three quarters of the territory is comprised. It's clear waters and pristine beaches make it a popular tourist attracting visiting Seylosians and from other nationalities. Despite its small size it also retains a large national park, roughly a quarter of the territory, covered in dense tropical vegetiation.

Governance

Maimi is governed by a Territorial Council, a type of ruling body found in both Kaseka and Llalta. The council is elected by various districts within the Governorship and is the legistlative body of Maimi. The Governor of Maimi is decided by an overall democratic vote amongst the entire population and presides over the entire territory. All judicial matters however derive from Seylos, and while local judges are appointed by the Maiman government, the highest courts exist in Seylos.
