Henry Archibald Loguesea Nugent is a Delamarian politician, activist and diplomat, who has served as Prime Minister of Delamaria and Leader of the Liberal Conservative Party since 2024. He previously served as International Development Secretary, and has sat as MP for Penkern since 2012. Nugent is described as a Commonwelath conservative, advocating for socially liberal policies and a Social market economy. Nugent became Prime Minister in January 2024 after winning the 2024 Liberal Conservative Leadership contest, following the resignation of Philip Campbell.
Early life and education
Nugent was born on December 30th, 1981 to Brigadier General Michael Nugent and Moura Cadogan-Loguesea in Marbury, Labrador. His father was a senior military officer, who served as a defence advisor to Elizabeth Grantham's government, and his mother, Moura, was a socialite and granddaughter of Arthur Cadogan-Loguesea, Earl of Marbury. Nugent boarded at the Westcourt School in Central Labrador, before attending the University of Westchester in 1999. In 2002 he granduated Westchester with a master's degree in Politics, Economics and Philosophy with Lysian and Ahroman.
Early career
Nugent's first job was as a researcher for the Development Office, and rose to direct operations in Alharu in 2007. Nugent resigned from the DO in 2008 in protest at the Severnson government's decision to place the development office objectives under foreign policy control. Nugent described this to The Labrador Times as "playing with the poorest on Eurth to support their [The Severnson Government's] own objectives". Nugent went on to work for the charity network DelamariAid, later helping to found the think tank New Commonwealth.
Parliamentary career
In 2011 Nugent unsuccessfully stood as the United Party candidate in the Penkern and Darrow by-election, where the deselected candidate John Lettle won in an upset. Nugent stood again in 2012 in the seat, winning an outright majority. Nugent went on to serve as deputy parliamentary chairman of the United party, and was appointed to the Elections Committee in 2014. On the committee Nugent oversaw the 2016 Electoral constituency review, and was accussed of taking advantage of his position to redraw his own constituency's boundaries in order to disclude the towns of Darrow and Postle.
In 2016 Nugent was considered as a candidate for Vice President of Delamaria on a ticket with Pierre Monroe, losing out to Deborah Van Roose. The following year Nugent was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Department for Health, however after clashes with then Secretary of Health Richard Hanning Nugent was moved to the Department of International Development. Nugent was credited as one of the most powerful parliamentary secretaries in the Presidential era, dominating policy development and implementation, outlasting three secretaries of the department. Nugent served in the office until 2023, when after the constitutional convention and the end of the presidential era, he was formally made Secretary for International Development by Philip Campbell.
Secretary for International Development
Nugent arrived at the Department for International Development on March 16th, 2023. Nugent initially clashed with the Foreign Secretary Leanne Kewley over a Foreign Department request to divert funding in Ceris towards better off regions in order to improve Delamarian standing, at the expense of areas with worse conditions. Nugent rejected the request and nearly faced resignation without the intervention of Lord Middleton the Special representative for Ceris, who committed his Office's funding to cover the request instead of the DO.
Under Nugent's 10 month leadership the Department's funding increased by two thirds, and its staff increased by 40%. Nugent also committed to founding the Parker Institute for Development at the University of Westchester, establishing education programs for aspiring development and diplomatic officials.
Prime Minister
Nugent was formally made Prime Minister by King William on January 18th, 2024.
