The provinces of Mahana (Mahanan: महान प्रान्तहरु, romanized: Mahāna Pradeśharū) were formed on 15 April 1993 in accordance with Schedule 4 of the Constitution of Mahana, signed following the Mahanan Civil War reforms. The seven provinces were formed by grouping the existing districts. The current system of seven provinces replaced an earlier system where Mahana was divided into 14 administrative zones which were grouped into five development regions.

History

Following the Mahanan Civil War, a government assembled by the Mahanan Congress put together a reformed constitution. Schedule 4 of the constitution entailed the formation of the refined 7 new "provinces" in Mahana. This replaced the "Kṣētra" or "Region" system which was used in the Kingdom of Mahana. The new provinces were made in accordance to historic borders and districts that divide many ethnic groups that inhabit them. These new provinces were then divivded into "Districts", which are smaller self-governing sub-divisions of the provinces.
